Description:
Chatto & Windus, Oct 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Isaiah Berlin was one of the leading liberal thinkers of the 20th century, and one of its fastest talkers. Born in the Latvian port of Riga in 1909, his family survived the Russian Revolution, but its chilly aftermath forced his Anglophile father to resettle them in Surbiton in 1921. Isaiah assimilated quickly, becoming in his mind equal parts Russian, English and Jewish, and subsequently he became the first Jew to be elected a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He was to spend most of his life studying and lecturing at Oxford, developing his concept of "negative liberty", but although he longed to know one big thing, to be a "hedgehog" in his own famous definition, instead he felt more naturally a "fox", knowing many smaller things. This Reynard instinct, however, made him wonderful company, and he became that rarity: a British public intellectual, who made learning attractive. \n Michael Ignatieff has written a book that stands somewhere… Read more

Description:
Edinburgh University Press, May 2005. Hardcover. The Lesser Evil", which comprises Michael Ignatieff's six essays based on his 2003 Gifford Lectures, is a useful introduction to and assessment of liberal political thought and behaviour in the face of opponents who don't play by the rules. The consequences to the state of engaging with its enemy outside the laws of war are perilously uncertain, Ignatieff admits, but they have to be faced and accepted. If terrorists are not stopped, he argues, the living conditions inside the besieged state would become unrecognizable. Liberal regard for individual rights would disappear. The carnivore must overrule the herbivore, therefore, even in the liberal state and especially when that state is attacked. Ignatieff uses these shocking nouns to contrast "realpolitik" with civil libertarianism in this context. However, he states, "If the automatic response to mass casualty terrorism is to strengthen secret government, it is the wrong response. The right one is to… Read more

Description:
Vintage, Mar 2001. New edition. Paperback. Kosovo was, Michael Ignatieff asserts, "the first post-modern war". A lateral step from the Gulf War, and further than just decades away from the total wars of the 20th century, it was essentially fought on the Allied side by a few thousand airmen with not one combat casualty, yet was watched by billions of spectators. War without death, he argues, is surely "virtual" war, and this gladiatorial vision, of foreign policy stripped of its physical and emotive restraints, forms the basis of his third book in an unintentional trilogy. The first two books--"Blood and Belonging" and "The Warrior's Honor"--explored themes of ethnic nationalism and the impossibly fine line between negligence and interference for outside, ie, generally Western, "democratised" nations or individuals. "Virtual War" uses Ignatieff's personal experiences in and around Kosovo to bring the two together in a meditation on the Balkans and, by way of it, the future of modern warfare (though… Read more

Description:
Vintage, Feb 1999. New edition. Paperback. Written for a variety of periodicals during the small wars of the New World Order, these essays on modern warfare discuss the collapse of old ideas of chivalry under the influence of frankly silly nationalist ideas that would be ludicrous if they did not lead to atrocity. The internationalism opposed to this is itself by definition suspect because it is so heavily mediated by television and by the globalisation that implies. Compassion is a complex entity when heavily loaded with voyeurism and with a feeling that knocking heads together is the role of the powerful of the world; Ignatieff points out how compassion gets thoroughly muddled up with what is a bit too much like bullying. Freud's phrase "the narcissism of minor differences" is apposite; small nations define their difference from nations not distinguishable from them by outsiders by exaggerating minor traits. The typical soldiery of the 90s is an irregular without the constraints on their… Read more

Description:
O'Brien Press Ltd, Feb 2004. Paperback. Recommended. One of the authors Martin Ingram(a pseudonym) was a member of the FRU(Force Research Unit),a british military intelligence outfit which recruited informers within northern irelands paramilitary organisations. This book looks at the cases of many informers but has most details of the 2 most famous. After chapters on the authors FRU training in recruiting and running informers,we get a number of chapters on STAKEKNIFE. This informers name has been in the public domain for nearly a year, and the book confirms his identity. STAKEKNIFE was the supreme irony. He was the deputy of the Irish Republican Army's internal security unit(the so called nutting squad),which was tasked with finding informers within the IRA. It lists 35 alleged Informants who were executed by stakeknife,so as to maintain his cover within the IRA. The book also confirms the identity of other informers, some are named, others are given pseudonyms whilst their activities are described.… Read more

Description:
Oxford Paperbacks, Sep 1997. Paperback. Heidegger is not an easy thinker, and to write a "very short introduction" to his thought is a huge task. This book succeeds admirably in introducing the key ideas in Heidegger's work. I read it before embarking on Being and Time and found it really useful in orienting myself in the text. But even without reading Being and Time this book would have enabled me to think confidently about Heideggerian ideas. Very enriching.
