Description:
INGLE, Edward. Captain Richard Ingle, the Maryland "Pirate and Rebel," 1642-1653. Baltimore: Maryland Historical Society, 1884. 1st ed. 53 pp. Lacks front wrapper, else a very good copy. Ingle sided with the Puritans during the English Civil War and fell out with the Catholic leaders in Maryland. He returned to Maryland in 1645, attacked the settlement of St. Mary's imprisoning the colony's leaders, and took control of the Maryland government. He and his men looted the property of wealthy Catholics and exiled two Jesuit priests in chains. When Calvert returned in August 1646, Ingle was arrested and executed though most of his men were pardoned.
