Liverpool: Reprinted from the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society , 1909. Softcover. First edition thus (apparently taken and reprinted from a larger publication); 6 x 9 3/4; pp. 4; olive green wraps; few crease lines to upper margin; nick to fore-edge; few minor spots of foxing; very good. Forward in English; 4 songs in Romani with the first one also with a French translation. It is not exactly clear how Augustus Edwin John - the renowned Welsh post-Impressionism artist - met the Demeter Family in Cherburg in order to record their songs. In his introduction he wrote the Demeters were coppersmiths from Baku. He also noted that, though good people and skilled craftsmen, they were chased out of England but they were welcome in France.

South Bend, IN: Flora A. Jones, 1892. Very good. Circular, n. d. (ca 1892); 6 x 5; single sheet, pp. [2]; pink stock, printed in black and illustrated with a small woodcut portrait; light horizontal crease line, else minor wear; in very good to near fine condition. At a time, when women's roles were largely encompassed by the domestic sphere, Flora Jones appears to have been an astute enterpreneaur and inventor, with a great business sense and aggresive advertising campains. What is more, she purportedly exclusively emplyed women, nearly 1000 of them, to manage branch offices of her business throughout the United States. She also had her own printing office, with three presses, for her advertising and packing material, and employed her own mail carrier. Ms. Jones started her empire in the early 1880s with her "Blush of Roses" lotions, oils, and powders for removing freckles and all other types of "facial disfigurments." She would dare anybody to question the purity of her… Read More

First edition; 3 1/4 x 5; pp. 4; a crease and two small closed cuts to upper corners, else very minor wear; a small correction with ink on pp. 3; very good or better. The report was compiled in 1879 by the Text-book Committee of Bennington (comprised of various educators, a doctor, a minister, and the town's Superintendent) and was filed with the Town Clerk, as required by the Vermont Legislature. Its purpose was to ensure uniformity of prices and the best selection possible of school printed materials. It contains a short summary of the committee's work and prices of textbooks not to be increased for five years. The report also states that "...in the Committee's opinion, dealers should have a reasonable profit above the following scale of prices for selling the books."

Rockford, Ill: Rockford Publishing Co., 1885. Good. First edition thus (first part published separately in 1878); 8 x 5 1/2; pp. [7], vi-x, [1], xii-xvi, [1], 4-314, [3], 6-300, [2]; embossed mustard cloth over boards, decorated in gilt and black; illustrated with numerous engravings; rubbed spots to corners and tips of spine; lacking ffep, else complete; hinges a bit weak; repair to title page and occasional smudging to margins; in about good condition. An exceedingly-scarce Victorian work on interior design and furnishing, published at the height of the Aesthetic Movement, it contained two distinctive parts - the first dealing with furniture, wallpaper, carpets, etc. for each room and the second - with window treatment, flower arrangements, lamp shades, embroidered seats, and so on. Of particular interest was the exhaustive sections on curtains and draperies, as given the 19th-century's rapid succession of revival styles, coming to and falling out of fashion, it usually meant that drapery… Read More

Barcelona: Union de Quiosqueros, 1931. First Edition. First edition, n. d. (1931); 6 3/4 x 4 3/4; pp. [3], 6-28, [4]; stapled, pictorial wraps, printed in black, white, and red; illustrated with four half-tones; a bit of wear to corners and spine; very good condition. A wonderful and quite-rare photoplay for this Russian, Proletariat, silent movie, it was published for its release in Barcelona in November of 1931, a year after it was first shown in Russia. The illustrated synopsis, with simple dialogue, appeared in the weekly publication "La Pelicula Nueva," Vol. I, No. 4, although in this case the entire issue was devoted to this one film, whose plot revolved around collectivization. After its appearance, the creator - screen writer, producer, and director Oleksandr Dovzhenko (1894 - 1956) - was forced by the Soviet Gocernment to severely re-edit it. Praised as one of the best silent movies ever made, it was voted one of the twelve greatest films of all time by a panel of over a 100… Read More
