Description:
Westminster, MD: Heritage Books. New. 2006. Soft Cover. This volume contains marriage and death notices abstracted from microfilm copies of newspapers available at the New York State Library. Information has been abstracted from the Havana Journal (1853-1887) , the Watkins Democrat (1878-1900) , the Watkins Express (1871-1900) , and the Watkins Review (1896-1900). These newspapers were all published in Schuyler County, New York, but they include many notices for people living in the nearby counties of Seneca, Cayuga, Yates, Tompkins, Tioga, Chemung, and Steuben, as well as for people who moved out of state. Vital records were recorded by the Town Clerk in New York State beginning in 1885, however not all marriages and deaths were recorded until 1906 when it became mandatory. This book also contains difficult-to-find vital records that pre-date 1885. A surname index adds to the value of this work. .

Description:
Heritage Books. New. 1995. Paperback. 443 pages. Prior to 1880, when New York State town clerks began recording vital records, the best source for such information was local newspapers. This book presents nearly 7,000 marriage notices abstracted from Washington County, New York, newspapers from 1799 to 1880-data which otherwise may be difficult to come by, and which is undoubtedly a valuable aid to researchers. Although published in Washington County, these notices are not limited to that specific area. They include marriages in neighboring counties of New York and Vermont, and of people formerly of Washington County who moved to other parts of New York or to other states. Along with the names and date of marriage, these notices often include residence, place of marriage and names of family members. Sometimes ages and occupations are also mentioned. The notices are arranged chronologically by newspaper, and a surname index is included. When used together with the authors' Death… Read More

Description:
New York: Touchstone. New. 2010. Trade Paperback. 256 pages. Who are you and where do you come from? As a historian, Buzzy Jackson thought she knew the answers to these simple questions—that is, until she took a look at her scrawny family tree. With a name like Jackson (the twentieth most common American surname), she knew she must have more relatives and more family history out there, somewhere. Her first visit to the Boulder Genealogy Society brought her more questions than answers . . . but it also gave her a tantalizing peek into the fascinating (and enormous) community of family-tree huggers and after-hours Alex Haleys. In <I>Shaking the Family Tree</I>, Jackson dives headfirst into her family gene pool: flying cross-country to locate an ancient family graveyard, embarking on a weeklong genealogy Caribbean cruise, and even submitting her DNA for testing to try to find <I>her </I>Jacksons. And in the process of researching her own family lore (<I>Who… Read More

Baltimore: Clearfield. New. 2003. Second Edition. Paperback. 0.6 x 8.3 x 5.4 Inches. 316 pages. Unlike a textbook or how-to book, which genealogists should consult prior to venturing upon a research trip, <I>A Field Guide for Genealogists</I>, by Judy Jacobson, is the perfect book to take with you once you have embarked. Consider the following scenarios: (1) You're doing research in a courthouse when you come across a term in a will that you don't understand; (2) You run across an old photograph of people who are supposed to be your ancestors, but you just can't place the subjects of the photo; (3) You find your great-great-great-grandmother's death certificate only to learn that she died from a disease you'd never heard of. The latest title from the prolific Mrs. Jacobson is designed to remove not only the foregoing stumbling blocks but also to answer thousands of other practical questions which quite naturally arise during the course of research.… Read More

New York: Vintage Books. Fine. 2016. Trade Paperback. Deckle-edged pages. 136 pages. Throughout her illustrious career as the Queen of Crime, P. D. James was frequently commissioned by newspapers and magazines to write a special short story for Christmas. Now, for the first time, four of the best are collected here. In “The Twelve Clues of Christmas,” James’s iconic Scotland Yard detective, Adam Dalgliesh, is drawn into a case that is pure Agatha Christie. In “A Very Commonplace Murder,” a respectable clerk’s secret taste for pornography is only the first reason he finds for not coming forward as a witness to a terrible crime. “The Boxdale Inheritance” finds Dalgliesh reinvestigating a notorious murder at the insistence of his godfather—only to uncover the darkest of family secrets. And in the title story, a bestselling crime novelist describes the crime in which she herself was involved some fifty years ago.Playful and ingenious, shot through… Read More

New York: Mysterious Press. Near Fine. 1987. 1st Mysterious Press Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 234 pages. In this riveting true crime account, acclaimed author P. D. James, the "Queen of the English mystery novel" (Newsweek) joins forces with historian T. A. Critchley to re-create the Radcliffe Highway murders, a series of vicious crimes committed in 1811 ... The scene is the London Docks near Wapping Old Stairs, a sinister neighborhood where pirates were often hanged. The first victims were two hardworking shopkeepers, along with their baby and shop boy. Twelve days later and only a few blocks away, an equally blameless pub owner was found together with his wife and servant, victims of equal cruelty and apparent absence of motive. The serial killings provoked nationwide notoriety and panic. With the atmosphere and pacing of her best novels, James reveals the rudimentary police system of Regency London coping with a major murder investigation -- and crimes that rank up there… Read More
