The spine is blue-green with title, author, and publisher in black; it is mildly rolled on top and bottom. The dust jacket is in good minus condition with several condition issues; it is heavily frayed around the edges with some loss on the front (about 1' x1") and spine (about 1" x 1/2"); the spine is sunned. The front is colorful, the original price ($4.00) is intact on inside front flap with photo of the author and illustrator taken by Edwin Way Teale on the inside rear flap. The dust jacket is now protected in a clear, archival removable cover. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is in good plus condition. The pages are clean and bright. Previous owners name and date on front free endpaper, otherwise there is no other writing or foxing detected. The top corners of pages are creased. The book contains over 50 b/w illustrations by Francis Lee Jaques.

The light green covers are in good condition, there is bumping/rolling on top/bottom of spine and corners and a few small stains/smudges on covers, including a small red stain on front. The title, illustrator name, and a nature illustration are in bright gold on the front cover. The spine is sunned but title and author still readable. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is in very good condition. The pages are clean and bright, there is no writing, markings, or foxing detected - but there is a small tear on the first page of text. The book includes 11 color plates by the illustrator Maud U. Clarke (all present).

The front paper cover of this booklet is completely detached, but present; the back cover is partially detached. There are also some chips in the covers, especially a large one on the top of front cover (approx. 1" x 1"). The binding is otherwise tight and intact. The rest of the booklet is in generally good condition, the only other significant blemishes are the ex-library markings. On the front cover, there is a small New York State Library stamp along with one on the inside of the back cover. On the bottom of the verso of the title page, there is a small stamp and writing that indicate this booklet was a gift of the A. R. Spofford estate in 1908. This could refer to Ainsworth R. Spofford (1825-1908) who served as the Librarian of Congress from 1864 to 1897.
