The 40pp side-stitched manifesto is a "Protest against the decision of the Commission of the Synod of the Ned. Geref. Kerk of the Orange Free State not to take steps against those members who had taken part in the Rebellion of 1914" (SABIB Vol. 2 p.531). The author seems to have been determined to reach a wide audience as there is a panel to the back wrap which reads: "Geachte Lezer, - Zal u niet willen helpen met de verspreiding van dit Boekje, door een dozijn of meer te ontbieden, en hetzij te verkopen of onder vrienden gratis te verspreiden?". The title page, the last page and the back wrap are heavily browned esp. at the margins but the front wrap more evenly so. The intervening pages are however clean and undiscoloured. Illus colour wraps clean with small creases to outer corners at front. Bit of insect damage at extreme top outer corner last four pages. Outer edge of textblock is a little soiled. Prev owner's details to inside front wrap. Two of the many b/w illus. have been rather fetchingly coloured in o/w unmarked though well-thumbed. Nice copy.

[xii] + 472pp of text, appendix and index. The boards are rubbed and at the extremities. The top of the spine is chipped and torn and the spine base is scuffed. There is a library stamp to the front pastedown and another to the title page. There is a ref no stamped to the title page and a pencilled ref no. to both the front pastedown and to the ffep. The binding is tight but there are two or three between-section binding cracks. Some of the leaves have been clumsily cut and a few leaves remain uncut. The prelims and the first 20pp or so and the last 12pp as well as the index are foxed. An extremely rare first edition that would benefit from a touch of restoration.
