Description:
New-York: Leavitt & Allen, 1856. Very good.. Later issue of this illustrated chapbook collection of short stories, including a story of Andrew Jackson during his military years, published as the Civil War loomed. Among the material in THE TROUBADOUR focused on everyday activities (a girl learns the importance of practicing the piano, a boy flies a kite) are a passages about Holland and Mexico City, as well as a description of the work of the US Mint and, interestingly, a story about one of Andrew Jackson's military campaigns. As Civil War grew closer on the horizon in the 1850s, some looked to Jackson as a figure to emulate: "[h]e was famous for preserving the Union in the 1830s," notes NPR's Steve Inskeep, and he "insisted that federal law reigned supreme." Though Jackson, a slaveholder who "never favored abolition" seemed an unlikely hero for the Union cause, Abraham Lincoln kept the former president's portrait on his wall through the Civil War (Parks). This issue of THE TROUBADOUR is uncommon…

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1910. Very good.. Deluxe large paper edition, limited to 500 copies, featuring Japanese folk tales gathered by a Tokyo-born British woman. Grace James was the daughter of a British Naval officer born in Tokyo while her father was stationed there. She grew up in Japan until age 12; in the introductory note, James explains that many of the tales in this book are "relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a school-fellow or a nurse." James also drew on traditional sources like the Kojiki ("Record of Ancient Matters"), a central work for ancient Japanese mythology. This work is a remarkable example of the influence of japonisme in early 20th-century English book production. Golden Age artist Goble was Macmillan's favored illustrator for their gift books, many of which were deluxe reprints of classic fairy tales similar to this one. Quarto. 11'' x 8.5''. Original full gilt-stamped vellum, original yellow silk ties. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut.…
