London: Printed for J. Wickins; and to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1695. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. COLLATION: A-B4 C-F8 G-Q4, COMPLETE. [2], 19-176 pp. Attractive half calf antique, marbled boards, red morocco label gilt, compartments gilt with small tools. ¶ FIRST EDITION of this important collection of Parliamentary debates, providing original and valuable documentation of the constitutional crisis that ensued during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. James II of England (a.k.a. James VII of Scotland), while fleeing to France, dropped the Great Seal of the Realm into the Thames. In Parliament the question was discussed whether he had forfeited the throne or had abdicated. The present volume offers detailed arguments for the both, but ultimately the latter designation was agreed upon, and in a full assembly of the Lords and Commons, it was resolved in spite of James's protest "that King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the… Read More

Description:
New York: Doubleday, 1996. Hardcover. Very Good/Very good. Octavo, 470 pages, original cloth with dustjacket. Illustrated throughout in black and white and color. ¶ The flowering of civilization, the rebirth of classical scholarship, and the emergence of some of the greatest artists and thinkers the world has known: this is the traditional view of the Renaissance. In this lively, provocative, and wholly absorbing new book, Lisa Jardine offers a radical new interpretation, arguing that the creation of culture during the Renaissance was inextricably tied to the creation of wealth.

Fascinating and well written travel account by a single woman traveling alone in Cuba (at the time she was 38 years old). The author (1833-1909) published a number of books under the pseudonym W.M.L. Jay (see below). Richard E. Morris observes: "W.M.L. Jay submitted that the 'civil law of Cuba is kinder to the slave than ever our own was.' Description:
Midlothian & Waxahachie, TX: Penn Jones Publications, 1976. vol. 1 no. 1. Staplebound. Very Good. 4to. Original photocopy, folded (unstapled) as issued. 16 pp. The rarest of all the original "Deep State" conspiracy theories, Deep in the Heart of Texas, namely vol. 1 no. 1 of Penn Jones's "Continuing Inquiry." This original mission of this pioneering Texas newsletter was to debunk the Warren Commission report; the focus of "The Continuing Inquiry" soon broadened to encompass all aspects of the ongoing powers of Deep State America during the critical years of 1976-1984. Seemingly NO lead was too trivial for the editor, Penn Jones (1914-1998), who was among the earliest to publicly challenge the "official" narrative of the JFK assassination. As the newsletter continued into the Reagan years, Jones was quick to point out the increasing power of the Deep State and expand his newsletter to include reportage on aspects and incidents that led back to the players in the JFK assassination. For a lengthy… Read More

Description:
Poughkeepsie, NY: Eastman National Business College, 1882. Oblong 8vo. (100 x 170 mm; 4" x 7"). 102 leaves (fol. 12 blank, fol. 98 loose). "Autographs" album bound in contemporary full green morocco (spine expertly rebacked). ALBUM AMICORUM MANUSCRIPT FROM THE HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK, CA. 1872, FEATURING FIVE EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLES OF AMERICAN CALLIGRAPHY BY S.V. JOHNSON. In this album of 102 leaves are warmly inscribed autograph sentiments, many of which are quite accomplished, and all but one dated during the summer months of the year 1872. The album was certainly compiled by a student of the Eastman National Business College of Poughkeepsie; while many of the student's colleagues were from the Hudson River valley, others came from the southern United States, the Midwest, and as far away as Cuba and Colombia. The album contains an etched vignette entitled "Residence and Pleasure Grounds of Prof. H.G. Eastman, Presd't of Eastman College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on the Hudson," which depicts a horse-drawn… Read More

[Washington]: GPO, 1866. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. 47, [1] pp. (final page blank), textblock browned. Modern sympathetic wrappers, upper cover with title in manuscript. SECOND FRENCH INTERVENTION OF MEXICO, A MAGNIFICENT FAILURE. This fascinating document contains abundant diplomatic correspondence and translations of strictly contemporary foreign newspaper reports; in it United States Government reports its enormous concern about French troops permanently occupying Mexico. These troops were but a few months away from withdrawing and returning to France, with the inevitable defeat of the Second Mexican Empire and the execution of Maximilian in June 1867. The position of Andrew Johnson and his Secretary of State William Seward was made perfectly clear: "The U.S. government considers it necessary for France to stop insisting on imposing imperialism on our sister republic of Mexico..." [...] "Also, warn Austria that she should not continue to sponsor the government of Prince Maximilian, who… Read More

Bound in modern blue percaline cloth by Lobstein-Laurenchet, red morocco spine label gilt, original front cover wrapper preserved. Separate printing of the "Mémoires de la société du muséum d'histoire naturelle de Strasbourg." Some foxing but an excellent copy. THE FIRST ANATOMICAL STUDY ON THE GIRAFFE. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO THE TAXIDERMIST WHO UNDERTOOK THE ACTUAL 20-DAY DISSECTION. This Abyssinian female giraffe, named "Twiga" (the Swahili word for giraffe), was transported alive to Toulouse in 1843 at the age of approximately 3 years. She died on January 4, 1844, either from the harshness of the European climate or (as some said) nostalgia for her homeland. In any event, after she was dissected and studied by researchers she was cooked and eaten by multiple Toulousian families at the Feast of Epiphany (!) The… Read More

Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, 1974. First Edition. Very good. Pressbook (8 1/2" x 11" stapled as issued). 9 ff. printed in b/w on glossy paper (rectos only). Preserved in mylar sleeve. Uncommon promo materials for one of the earliest Janis Joplin documentaries. "Janis: A Film" is justly considered to be a major source of footage for all subsequent works on the subject. "Janis" consists almost entirely of archival footage. Directed by Howard Alk and Seaton Findlay, the film was innovative on account of its total lack of narration, and almost none of the footage was identified by captions. "Janis" is almost unsettling due to the fact that no one who appears in the film communicates that the subject of the documentary had actually died. The present pressbook was distributed to movie theaters all around the U.S. and Canada; there are multiple images and publicity stills presented in multiple resolutions and sizes (from 14 to 400 lines). All the film credits and song titles appear on fol. 1 (as do… Read More

Description:
Boston and New York: Joy, Langdon & Co, 1873. Very good. Textile product label (170 x 135). Engraved script below imprint cropped affecting several words, one short tear, corner chip, light soil. Our example appears to have actually been used for its original purchase, namely pasted on fabric as there is still glue residue on the verso, and numbering in pencil and also red ink on the verso. The number of yards of the fabric is recorded in contemporary ink: "48.2" Wonderfully gloomy factory scene rendered at the height of the American Industrial Revolution. The engraving depicts the Boston manufacturing plant of Joy, Langdon & Co., located at 76 Chauncey Street. Here the viewer is confronted by a bleak "no exit" view, with towering factories on both sides bisected by train tracks leading inexorably towards a belching smoke stack; on the left is an almost ecclesiastical looking building topped with a bell tower. The scene is populated with a total of seven men in suits and top-hats; curiously, the… Read More
