Description:
Inscription by former owner on fly leaf; some creasing of spine/cover through normal wear. Text is clean.

The name of French composer and musician Charles Tournemire (1870–1939) is familiar to organists. From 1898 to 1939, Tournemire was the titular organist at the Parisian Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde, a post once held by César Franck, his organ professor at the Paris Conservatoire. However, beyond the world of organists, Tournemire has been largely neglected and forgotten. This volume of collected essays, the first book on Tournemire available in English, aims at making Tournemire known to a wider audience. A number of essays investigate Tournemire's best-known work, a monumental organ cycle entitled L'Orgue mystique (The Mystic Organ) composed between 1927 and 1932. Related topics include Gregorian chant, improvisation, and performance practice. Tournemire's legacy is also considered in the careers of later musicians, including (among others) Joseph Bonnet (1884–1944), Maurice Duruflé… Read More

Description:

Description: The idea for this volume originated from discussions at the first international conference of the HERA project "Marrying Cultures". Colleagues from museums, galleries and university contexts were asked to focus not on the figure of the early modern consort herself but on specific objects or genres of objects associated with her. When a royal bride moved from one territory to another, she transported quantities of furniture, books, paintings, clothes, or jewelry to her new home. In later life, she often continued to acquire things from her native country or via her dynastic networks or she could serve as a conduit through which objects were exported. Two introductory essays look at patterns of exchange and inheritance. The case studies of objects that follow reveal general patterns of cultural exchange set in motion by royal consorts, in several cases focusing on relatively under-studied courts and dynasties. East and west, north and south were… Read More

Description:
Very good condition

Classical music shows a close relationship to language, and both musicology and philosophy have tended to approach music from that angle, exploring it in terms of expression, representation, and discourse. This book turns that idea on its head. Focusing on the music of Debussy and its legacy in the century since his death, After Debussy offers a groundbreaking new perspective on twentieth-century music that foregrounds a sensory logic of sound over quasi-linguistic ideas of structure or meaning. Author Julian Johnson argues that Debussy's music exemplifies this idea, influencing the music of successive composers who took up the mantle of emphasizing sound over syntax, sense over signification. In doing so, this music not only anticipates a central problem of contemporary thought-the gap between language and our embodied relation to the world-but also offers a solution. 0With a readable narrative structure grounded in an impressive body of literature, After Debussy ranges widely… Read More

Description:
This collection illuminates the concept of "Bildung" in the works of Fichte, Schiller, Humboldt, and Nietzsche. Besides seeking to work out the theoretical contour of aesthetic education in the 18th and 19th centuries, the contributions attempt to make reason known to itself in the interdisciplinary study of "Bildung", a concept important in fields as diverse as pedagogy, philosophy, and art. Moreover, a detailed examination of the concept of aesthetic education opens new perspectives on education debates in the present.
