London: Thos. Harrild, 1863 First edition. We could not locate much information on Charlotte Elizabeth Keddle (1833 – ?). She helped run a girls' Sunday school in Beaminster, Dorset and used her art sales to raise money for the church, including for the building of St. Peter's Church in Eype. White Apparel seems to be her only published book. . Publisher's white cloth stamped in gilt. Quarto. With a chromolithographed floral title-page and ten chromolithographs of white flowers. Each floral plate is accompanied by a leaf of text from the Bible printed in black and red with gold accents. Foxing to cloth and some rubbing to head of spine. All edges gilt. Some foxing and toning to leaves. One leaf loose (laid in at original position). A good copy of a scarce work. Thomas Harrild (1822 – 1867) was the son of Robert Harrild, co-inventor (with John Baxter) of the composition roller. Thomas, who began his career as a chromolithographer for Joseph Cundall with books like The Two Doves (1845), was a…

Description:
London: William Pickering, 1852 First edition. Full tan smooth calf, gilt double-ruled covers, gilt-decorated spine with black morocco label, marbled edges. . Small octavo. Spine a bit rubbed, a few light spots on front cover. A very good copy. Mary Kelty (1789-1873) was the daughter of an Irish surgeon. Influenced by the novels of Jane Austen, she published her novel The Favourite of Nature (1821) anonymously, dedicating it to Joanna Baillie. It was favorably received by Harriet Martineau. She followed it with several other novels, but then, after the sudden deaths of her parents, turned to religious pursuits, trying out several sects and going to faith healers. She wrote on Quaker themes in Early Days in the Society of Friends (1840) and Memoirs of the Lives and Persecutions of the Primitive Quakers (1844), and explored the workings of religion in individual lives in Facts and Feelings (1841). The present work, her autobiography, was highly regarded.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1863, First American edition. A London edition was published in the same year. Spot of soiling to front board. Contemporary ink gift inscription to front pastedown. Minor occasional foxing. A very good copy of this important anti-slavery memoir. Frances Anne Kemble (1809 – 1893) was an actress, writer, and abolitionist. She was a successful Shakespearean actress before marrying the heir to multiple lucrative plantations (whom she would divorce in 1848). Kemble and her husband moved to Georgia to live on one of the plantations, where Kemble was appalled by the treatment of the enslaved people who worked there. She wrote the present work during the year she lived on the plantation and circulated it informally in abolitionist circles at the time, but protests from her abusive husband prevented her…
