Mercatorfonds, 2009.. Karel de Stoute (1433-1477) was één van de rijkste vorsten van Europa. Hij wilde koning worden en poogde met dit doel zijn dochter Maria uit te huwelijken aan Maximiliaan, de zoon van de keizer. Karel de Stoute ging echter aan zijn eigen ambities ten onder. In 1476 moest hij tegen het leger van de Zwitserse Eedgenoten in de slagen bij Grandson en Murten het onderspit delven. Hij sneuvelde in 1477 in de slag bij Nancy. In datzelfde jaar nog trouwde zijn dochter Maria met de keizerszoon Maximiliaan. Zo ging het Bourgondische huis op in het Habsburgse huis. Habsburg werd een wereldrijk waar de zon nooit onder ging.
