Description:
Boston: Little, Brown & Co. / Atlantic Monthly Press, 1968. Uncorrected Proof. Comb binding. Fine. Octavo, 411pp. A fine copy in the publisher's comb binding with green covers. Scarce uncorrected galley proof for Kael's second book, a collection of her trenchant film criticism. We have not examined the text closely to note any differences from the published book, but they may exist. Each page is hand-numbered, and seems to have been bound from photocopies. The proof printer is identified as The Country Press in Middleboro, Massachusetts. First editions of this volume are not altogether uncommon, but we have never seen a proof in any state, nor can we locate one in OCLC using broad search terms. Scarce.

Boston: Little, Brown & Co, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Quarto, 156pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in like dust jacket. Tiny stain to the bottom of the front board and verso of jacket, and a few barely notable scrapes to the front panel of the jacket. Else a sharp, nice copy. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Karsh on the half-title page in the year of publication: For Hori, with warm regards from his friend Yousuf Karsh Oct 26, 1992." Though we have no way of proving it, it seems distinctly likely that the recipient was Kiyohide Hori, the Japanese photographer, who had commissioned Karsh to take his portrait, an event that spurred him to commit to his own photography career full-time (ref: Chanel Nexus Hall; biography of Hori).

Boston: Bulfinch / New York Graphic Society, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Large quarto, 202pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with the inner hinges a bit stressed, but holding. In a near fine dust jacket, lightly toned on the flaps and with some gentle wear at the crown. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Karsh on the front free endpaper: "Inscribed for Igor Kropotkin, with the warm personal regard of Yousuf Karsh 1976." The receipient is almost certainly the same Igor Kropotkin who was a major figure in American bookselling, having been the President of the American Bookseller's Association for two decades.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 195pp., illustrated. A very good, crisp copy in the publisher's beige cloth, lacking the dust jacket. Spine darkened and gently cocked, else a nice example. A marvelous copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Kaufman on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, to someone close to him: "To Mother B - With all my love, and [underlined] then some - George December, 1939." A news clipping entitled "Kaufman in Woollcott Role," which includes a photograph of Kaufman in the title role of this play (which is based on--and dedicated to--his friend and fellow Algonquin Round Table member Alexander Woollcott), is tipped onto the front paste-down. Woollcott himself had played in the role of Sheridan Whiteside in the West Coast production, until Kaufman stood in for him after Woollcott fell ill. A notation, possibly in Kaufman's or his wife's hand, reads "This was in Hollywood paper - thought you might like to see it." Another…

New York: Random House, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 195pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, gently spotted on the spine, but otherwise quite fresh and clean, near fine, lacking the dust jacket. This copy SIGNED and amusingly INSCRIBED by co-author Moss Hart on the front free endpaper: "For Jack - Yippy-i-ay-i-ay!* Moss Hart, December 1939. *Cowboy yell - for 'May I give you the check.' M. H." The play, co-written by George S. Kaufman, is explicitly based on the personality of Alexander Woollcott, who was a close friend and fellow member of the Algonquin Round Table with Kaufman. Though Hart was not a recluse, we have been unable to locate any copies of this play--one of his most enduring works--signed by him at auction or in recent commerce. As such, a significant example.

Description:
Newark, NJ: The Jewish Community Blue Book Publishing Company, 1924. Flexible boards. Very good +. Octavo, 861pp., illustrated. A very good or better copy in the publisher's limp navy cloth. Binding a touch shaken, and the bottom corners gently worn, but a clean copy with only an owner's inked name on the front free endpaper, else unmarked. An extraordinary publication, which gives a rich, detailed glimpse into Jewish life in Newark in the 1920s. Though undated, there are many references to events in 1922 and 1923, which suggests a publication date of 1924. The primary contents consist of names and addresses of Jewish Newarkers in several lists; among these are synagogue congregations, contributors to various fundraising drives, club members, and civic groups. Most interesting to us are the few dozen leaves of advertisements, mostly (though not exclusively) for Jewish-owned businesses of all kinds in the Newark area. Finally, at rear is a collection of photographic portraits of "outstanding men and…
