Description:
[Venice,: Giovanni Battista Albrizzi,, 1740].. 365 by 502mm. (14.25 by 19.75 inches).. Engraved map. The third state of the map, with the title changed to 'Imperio del Giappone' and published in Albrizzi's 'Atlante Novissimo'. Albrizzi (1698-1777) began to publish Salmon's 'Modern History…or, the present State of all Nations', 'Lo Stato Presente Di Tutti Paesi E Popoli Del Mondo' in 1731, when he issued volume one. The second volume "containing the map of Japan was published only in 1734. By 1738, the popularity of the work forced him into publishing a second edition, probably having exhausted the initial volumes. He continued to add volumes up to a least 1762, by which time he had issued a volume 26" (Hubbard). The map of Japan was a copy of Tirion's version of Kaempfer's map, probably engraved by Giuseppe Filosi (fl1732-1757), with only the title and the names of the seas and major features changed into Italian. The map retains Tirion's mistakes and has inadvertently joined 'Jesso of… Read More

Description:
London,: Published by James Haworth and Brother Ltd., [c1944].. 730 by 500mm (28.75 by 19.75 inches).. Chromolithograph map. The Dutch title to this war-time poster reads 'Indie Moet Vrij!' (The Indies Shall be Freed!). The poster, published in London towards the end of the Second World War was evidently aimed at the Free Dutch troops still station in Britain at the time, the Dutch East Indies having fallen under control of the Japanese Imperial Army. The theatre had been somewhat by-passed by the Allied powers who had decided not to occupy Sumatra but focus their efforts on Japan itself. In this light the post may be seen as a sop to the Dutch who may well have felt that their colonies had been ignored by their allies. Maps depicting Octopi have a long a distinguished history. The Octopus was most famously used by Fred Rose, who in 1870 depicted Russia as a malignant Octopus, its malignant tentacles spreading across the map. The device would be used by the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War of… Read More

Description:
London,: C.F. Kell, 8 Castle Street, Holborn,, [c.1877].. Image: 293 by 650mm (11.5 by 25.5 inches) Sheet: 445 by 755mm (17.5 by 29.75 inches).. Chromolithograph printed on card and laid on card title sheet, lettered in lithograph. A view of Billingsgate Fish Market, in its original location in Billingsgate Wharf, in Lower Thames Street. The market had existed informally since the sixteenth century, but an official building was put in place in 1850. The market quickly outgrew it, and a new building was designed by Sir Horace Jones, who also designed Tower Bridge. The market was built to incorporate a riverside landing, so that fishermen could unload their produce directly into the building. As the caption underneath commemorates, work began in 1874 and was completed in 1877, the presumable date of the print. Billingsgate was the biggest fish market in the world when the print was made, and was already notorious for the foul language used by the stallholders and porters. Amsterdam,: By Joannes van Keulen Boeck-verkooper en Graad-boogh-maacker, aende Nieuwe-brugh, in de gekroonde Lootsman,, [c1680].. 520 by 595mm (20.5 by 23.5 inches).. Double-page engraved chart. One of the first sea charts of north-east Asia, illustrating how little was known of the region. It shows from Novaya Zemlya in northern Russia, along the coast of Siberia (with few promontories and one one large island) past the mythical 'Land of Ezo' and 'Companies Land' to Japan, Korea and Zhoushan in China. There are no signs of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Kamchatka or the Bering Strait, as the chart predates the explorations of Vitus Bering by nearly fifty years and James Cook by nearly a century. Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715) was a Dutch maritime publisher.

Description:
Amsterdam,, 1750.. 505 by 580mm. (20 by 22.75 inches).. Manuscript map in brown ink and wash colours, contemporarily laid down on paper. During the period 1726-1755, when Johannes van Keulen II (1704–1755) was in charge as Hydrographer of the V.O.C., the first charts for the navigation to the East Indies and in the Malaysian Archipelago were engraved. Such charts printed or in manuscript are sometimes found as additions to copies of the Zee-Fakkel. They mark the beginning of what was to become the pilot guide for the East Indies. Several of the charts in the sixth part of the Zee-Fakkel were engraved after the manuscript master-models in the archives of the V.O.C. It was a common practice for the van Keulens to print sheets with a system of rhumblines and latitude scales, to be used as a base for manuscript maps. However, surviving examples, particularly of Far Eastern subjects are very scarce. This chart depicting Nagasaki seems to have been inserted in an example of the atlas, presumably in… Read More

Maps,""Nieuwe paskaart van de Straaten Sunda en Banca From the sixth volume of van Keulen's 'Zee-Fakkel' Engraved chart. Based on the """"newest and most accurate findings"""" (trans.), van Keulen's chart of the Sunda Strait, Bangka Strait and Java Sea, pays particular attention to numerous and potentially treacherous islands, shoals, and sandbanks that vessels must navigate. Published in van Keulen's 'De Nieuwe Groote Lichtende Zee-Fakkel, het Sesde Deel' (1753), the first printed Dutch sea atlas related exclusively to navigation east of the Cape of Good Hope. The manuscript prototype for the chart, c1740, is held in the archives of the Maritiem Museum, Rotterdam. Prior to 1730 the van Keulen family firm had supplied the VOC with some pre-existing printed charts of the route from Texel to the Cape of Good Hope, with their imprint covered by a dedicated… Read More

A view of St James's Park from 'Britannia Illustrata', one of the most famous topographical series of the eighteenth century. 'Britannia Illustrata' was conceived by David Mortier as a survey of the most important buildings in the country, drawn by Leonard Knyff and engraved by Johannes Kip. It was first published in 1707, then reissued and expanded with a French title in 1708-1713. The lack of French title indicates the date of the present example. The view is taken from south of St James's Park looking north. To the far left is Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace); other buildings depicted include St James's Palace, Marlborough House, Banqueting House, and Whitehall. There is a numbered key to the buildings at the lower edge of the print. The map's dedication to Anne is worth noting because it refers to her as the… Read More

London,, 1718.. Image: 500 by 1200mm (19.75 by 47.25 inches).. Two engraved panoramic views, each of London and Westminster, each on two sheets joined, engraved titles in French and English, keys on the foreground. A fine pair of views of London and Westminster from 'Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne' published by David Mortier. The Prospect of the City of London shows the city as seen from a high point on Southwark and it extends from St Clements Church to the Tower of London. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the many church towers dominate the skyline; London Bridge links the two shores and many ships travel on the Thames. The Prospect of Westminster stretches from Parson's Green in the west to Temple in the east, including in the background the country around and the towns of Kensington, Hampstead and Highgate. Houses and landmark buildings are shown in elevation, as well as smaller details such as trees and people. The River Thames spreads throughout the foreground, populated by… Read More

James Kirk (c1725-1791) has engraved this elegant trade card in a fashionable rococco style, which advertises a joint business he operated with this father, John.
