London: Published by P. & D. Colnaghi, for the Author, 1934. Fine. Lionel Lindsay, the famous Australian artist and critic, greatly admired Keene, the illustrator and humorous artist best known for his drawings for Punch. Lindsay believed Keene was "a truly original character...he presents us with the unparalleled paradox of the most serious artist of his time - in all that pertained to his art - devoting his genius to the service of humour...". Tipped-in are two autograph letters from Lionel Lindsay to the Australian collector Harry Chaplin. Tipped-in also is an undated autograph letter by Keene himself with a sketch and a fragment of another autograph piece. First edition, and very scarce: only 130 copies were printed, all numbered and signed by the author. Folio, original quarter cloth, frontispiece portrait and 55 fine collotype plates, each with tissue guard. Aside from a little shelfwear, this is a fine bright copy, uncut in the original binding with a slightly torn and stained dust-jacket.

Quarto, profusely illustrated with engraved plates throughout, original blue cloth; the top-edge of the front board is a bit sunned, yet a very good and crisp copy in a worn dust-jacket.

Beautiful photograph of the Society of Artists selection committee having a picnic on the floor of the art gallery in 1907 picturing (from left to right) Julian Ashton, Mrs Norman Lindsay, Harry Weston, Will Dyson, Norman Lindsay, Young Souter, Sydney Long, and D.H. Souter. The panel of watercolours on the wall was the first ever exhibited by J.J. Hilder. Quarto, green cloth with paper labels, top-edge gilt and others uncut, 12 mounted colour plates (including the frontispiece); lacks one of the printed tissue-guards, bindings slightly marked but still a fine copy.

Rare French edition of Kipling's story decorated with twenty-nine hand-coloured pochoir plates by leading Scottish book illustrator, Jessie King (1875-1949). Of particular interest is the remarkable snakeskin binding by Rene Kieffer (1875-1964) with matched oval gilt blocked cameos of lovers, designed by Kieffer in collaboration with the modernist tastemaker and artist, Pierre Emile Legrain. Other beautiful examples of shark and snakeskin bindings by Legrain and Kieffer appear in Alistair Duncan's Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding (London, 1989). There is something lovely about this copy, a beautiful old library book that looks exactly as it ought to. "...We are now running down to Penang with the thermometer 87* in the cabins, and anything you please on deck. London: T. Nelson & Sons, 1937. A contribution based chiefly on a study of the Black-Headed Gull. "The Black-headed Gull owes its name to its hood. As the hood is brown, although it may seem black from a distance, the name is not happily chosen. It stresses, moreover, a feature that serves as identification mark in the breeding season only. Outside the breeding season the bird's head is white, with a few dark flacks. A better means of recogition, present at all seasons, is the red legs and beak... The assumption kept in view throughout the book is that the gull, and birds in general, have a mind as well as a body." Vienna, 1939. A rare an unusual collection of original hand-painted fashion designs produced in Vienna before the outbreak of the Second World War. All seventeen designs are original artworks. Some feature ornate and carefully crafted crepe-paper whorls and rosettes, presenting the elegant fashion items as textured three dimensional forms. The plates comprise designs for a range of items and accessories - six pairs of shoes, ten pairs of gloves, and a parasol - all signed by the talented artist ‘Kropej'. It is known that Miss Kropej studied under the care of Emmy Zweybrück-Prochaska, who operated a privately owned art and craft school in Vienna from 1915. The school taught a range of skills in the decorative arts, and was renowned for wonderful toys and textile design. The school closed in 1939 when Emmy Zweybrück- Prochaska was forced to emigrate for the United States where she continued to work in textile design and the illustration of children's books. New York: The Century Co, 1908. A finely produced publication dedicated to the magic of the pearl, rarely found in such lovely original condition. Published in New York in 1908, this work is a splendid example of fine book production. Amongst much of interest, there is a long chapter on the Australian pearling industry: "As regards areas of distribution the most extensive pearl-oyster grounds of the world are situated on the northern and western coasts of Australia" the nude divers in the Australian pearl fisheries are mostly Malays and Australian aborigines."
