King was a major proponent of the Glorious Revolution and had significant political influence, much of which is evident in his work 'The State of the Protestants in Ireland'. Prior to this work, the Church of Ireland had legitimate fear of facing annihilation by the Jacobite parliament. King wrote this treatise to describe the fears that existed within the Church of Ireland; of which, many of the members had already fled to England. Notable topics King covers in this work include the consequences of the enforced circulation of money in Ireland by the administrative powers. 1682 1ed Mundus Subterraneus Kircher Geology DRAGONS Demons Alchemy ATLANTIS Athanasius Kircher was a 17th-century Jesuit scholar who published works on a wide variety of topics. He studied magnetism, geology, medicine, even Egyptian hieroglyphs. Perhaps, though, his most important contribution to the scientific world was his book 'Mundus Subterraneus' – a collection of his geological and geographical studies. According to Merrill, "Major topics include gravity, the moon, the sun, eclipses, ocean currents, subterranean waters and fires, meteorology, rivers and lakes, hydraulics, minerals and fossils, subterranean giants, beasts and demons, poisons, metallurgy and mining, alchemy, the universal seed and the generation of insects, herbs, astrological medicine, distillation and fireworks." In this monumental work, Kircher extensively describes countless aspects of the physical world – a description of the interior of Vesuvius, unexplained noises in the Strait of Messina, large human bones of extinct giant ... 1763 ALCHEMY Aurea Catena Homeri Golden Chain of Homer Occult Metaphysics Latin "Holds the key to Alchemy!" (Gardner) 'The Golden Chain of Homer', or 'Aurea Catena Homeri', is one of the most important works of alchemy and heretics of the 18th-century. Originally written in 1723, this work was a study into the school of practical metaphysics with heavy influence from the alchemical tradition (Heym). Heym further states that this book is "one of the most logical and readable books among a hundred books more less absurdly speculative." During a time when alchemy was finally being proven a pseudo-science, Anton Kirchweger wrote this 'final attempt' to combat new scientific thinking that was prevalent throughout Western Europe in hopes of preserving alchemy as a truth. He describes experiments used in alchemical studies using simple ingredients found in the earth and water. This 1763 second edition was a reissue of Ludwig Favrat's Latin edition and features a printing of Favrat's own thesis at the end. Item ... Read more

1869 1st ed Russian FABLES Ivan Krylov Russia Aesop La Fontaine Illustrated Ivan Krylov is still to this day Russia's best and most popular fabulist. Living at the turn of the 19th-century, Krylov did not begin writing fables until 1809, when he was 40 years old when he began adapting many of Aesop's and Fontaine's fables. However, Krylov put his own 'Russian' twist throughout his fables adding satire and whit not necessarily prevalent in the original versions. His fables were written to make light of controversial political situations occurring in Russian in the early 19th-century. This first English edition was adapted and translated by W.R.S. Ralston and David Douglas, and features charming vignette engravings at fable headings. Item number: #6531 Price: $350 KRYLOV, Ivan Andreevich Krilof and his fables, London : Strahan and Co., 1869.
