Good-only A close friend of Laura Riding and Robert Graves, Harry Kemp (1911-1994) was a poet and mathematics teacher: "A lively raconteur with a roving and satirical eye, he was a small, ruddy-faced man, old-fashioned in his dress, credulous in his judgements. Always short of funds, he nevertheless remained hospitable and spent what he could save on publishing more than 10 books of his cool, well-shaped poems." (Seymour, 1994). Bright, green pictorial cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and upper board. All edges gilt. Spine cocked, wear to edges. Feps neatly excised. Upper hinge cracked, gatherings shaken, but still a robust copy. Occasional spotting, else internally well-preserved. The 6s. presentation binding.

Bettany, M.A.' Adverts, however, suggest a date of 1901 - a case of the third edition text block with a later binding and adverts? 8vo, pp. 218, (4) adverts + b/w frontis. Buff cloth with red lettering and blue decoration to spine and upper board. A tatty copy externally: rubbed, faded and soiled with bumps to upper board. Browned edges. Endpapers tanned, occasional grubby finger marks. Else, a clean copy with attractive decorative head- and tail-pieces. An uncommon title by the copy editor of Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (1891).

Small 4to, pp. [24] + Kessell's frontis, 7 plates (mostly marine subjects), plus final tail-piece. Fawn paper boards, printed label to upper board. Wear and bumps to extremities, browned towards edges, a few marks. Sitwell's inscription in black pen to ffep: "Miss Eve Harrison/ from, spiritually,/ Osbert Sitwell/ December. 17. 1937." and below, in a slighter, less flamboyant hand: "Mary Kessell. December 21st 1937", endpapers toned, clipped newspaper portrait of Sitwell pasted to half-title, some spotting, heavier at front. Else, clean. A good+ copy of Sitwell's account in verse of the fisherman's wife and mother, rare with the pair of signatures. Mary M. Light lean to spine, band of sunning to top of front board, rubbed, scuffed and mottled. Light spotting, POI in black pen to ffep: "W. T. Newlyn/ Department of Economics/ University of Leeds/ Aug. 1949". Else, clean and tight. Good+ Professor Walter Tessier Newlyn (1915-2002) was a British economist and educator, known for his work on monetary theory and with African nations, especially Uganda. In 1945 Newlyn was accepted as a mature student to read economics at LSE and by 1948 he was an assistant lecturer at the University of Leeds (UoL), to which he remained affiliated throughout his career, despite working extensively in Africa. From 1967 (until his retirement in 1978) Newlyn was Professor of Developmental Economics and in 1964 had founded UoL's African Studies Unit, now LUCAS (Loxley, 2003).
