Grubby, soiled, bruised and worn, especially at spine ends. Edges toned and foxed, and into prelims. Kemp's rather terse inscription in sepia pen to ffep: "To Alix/ from/ Harry". Four page folded leaflet, 'Methuen Books/ Spring, 1939,' laid in (creased and darkened at top edges). A well-used copy. Good-only A close friend of Laura Riding and Robert Graves, Harry Kemp (1911-1994) was a poet and mathematics teacher: "A lively raconteur with a roving and satirical eye, he was a small, ruddy-faced man, old-fashioned in his dress, credulous in his judgements. Buff cloth with red lettering and blue decoration to spine and upper board. A tatty copy externally: rubbed, faded and soiled with bumps to upper board. Browned edges. Endpapers tanned, occasional grubby finger marks. Else, a clean copy with attractive decorative head- and tail-pieces. Good+ Professor Walter Tessier Newlyn (1915-2002) was a British economist and educator, known for his work on monetary theory and with African nations, especially Uganda. In 1945 Newlyn was accepted as a mature student to read economics at LSE and by 1948 he was an assistant lecturer at the University of Leeds (UoL), to which he remained affiliated throughout his career, despite working extensively in Africa. From 1967 (until his retirement in 1978) Newlyn was Professor of Developmental Economics and in 1964 had founded UoL's African Studies Unit, now LUCAS (Loxley, 2003).
