Description:
1916. Kanavel, Allen B. (1874-1938); Koch, Sumner; & Mason, Michael (1895-1963). Collection of 18 offprints, pamphlets, etc. on infections and orthopedic disabilities of the hand, with typed index and obituary notice of Kanavel. Various sizes, bound in one 4to volume. V.p., 1916-33. Buckram, somewhat soiled & worn; 11 offprints with original printed wrappers bound in. A few leaves frayed, but a very good set, from the library of Edward Delos Churchill (1895-1972; see G-M 3211.1), with his bookplate. A remarkable group of early papers on hand surgery by Kanavel and his successors Sumner Koch and Michael Mason, who together were largely responsible for the development of hand surgery as a separate discipline. Most of these offprints would be nearly impossible to replace. Included is Mason and Clarence Shearon's important paper, "The process of tendon repair: An experimental study of tendon suture and tendon graft" (Arch. Surg. 25 [1932]), described by Boyes as "one of the classics of the literature of… Read More

1939. Katz, Bernard (1911- ). Group of 4 offprints / pamphlets, as listed below. Various sizes. V.p., 1939-52. Two offprints in original wrappers. Very good. First / First Separate Editions. Katz shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod for their discoveries concerning the activation, inactivation, and storage mechanisms of neurotransmitters, chemicals in the body that stimulate nerve and muscle cells. In the 1950s Katz and his colleagues conducted a series of experiments that revealed the precise action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which was known to be the primary chemical that monitors nerve and muscle cell stimulation. They found that acetylcholine was constantly being released in small amounts from the end of neurons. Katz's research served as a foundation for understanding the general workings of the entire nervous system, because the storage, release, and inactivation of acetylcholine was later discovered to be the same for other… Read More

At this time cesarean sections were rare: two years previously, while practicing in Philadelphia, Kelly had become the first surgeon in that city in fifty years to perform a cesarean operation successfully. Kelly joined Johns Hopkins in 1889 as one of the "Four Founders" of the university's school of medicine. Baltimore, 1916. Kelly, Howard A. (1858-1943). The double shame of Baltimore: Her unpublished vice report and her utter indifference. 24pp. Illustrated. [Baltimore]: Raine Print, n.d. [1916]. 223 x 153 mm. Original printed wrappers, light dust-soiling at edges. First Separate Edition. Kelly, an evangelical Christian, was a "lifelong moral crusader" (DAB) against prostitution, alcohol abuse and other evils. In the present pamphlet he provided a 5-page preface to Winthrop Lane's article decrying two particularly heinous immoralities unearthed by a government survey--the widespread seduction of young women in the workplace, and the practice of institutionalizing unwanted illegitimate infants. The survey, commissioned by the governor of Maryland, found that over 80 percent of the babies admitted into so-called charitable institutions died within three months of admission.
