New York: Random House, 1936. First printing. (111) pp., 9.75 x 12.25 inches. Quarter-cloth and paper over boards. First edition. Even toning to pages, light foxing to gutters and edges of pastedowns (and hinges of cloth spine), shelf wear to bottom edges of boards, still very good in a very good, lightly soiled jacket with small chips and closed tears to edges. Words and music to eleven songs by the songwriting team of Kalmar and Ruby, who wrote for such stage and screen icons as the Marx Brothers and Eddie Cantor, and who were the subject of the 1950 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical Three Little Words, starring Fred Astaire and Red Skelton. Two of the songs included (¬ďCaptain Spalding¬Ē and ¬ďThe Musketeers¬Ē) appeared in the stage and film versions of the Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers. Introducing and commenting on the songs are ¬ďreasonably accurate dissertations¬Ē by Ben Hecht, Groucho Marx, Robert Benchley, Irving Berlin, Moss Hart, Frankiln P. Description:
Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1968. First Edition. Stapled wrappers. [8] pp. The "unpublished edition." A memoir of a particular literary milieu in late-50s New York, commisioned by John Martin as a free gift to be included with copies of books by George Economou, Jerome Rothenberg, Armand Schwerner, and Diane Wakoski being published by Black Sparrow. This version, whose cover listed the names of eight poets (the aforementioned, as well as Antin, Eshleman, Antin, and Owens), was suppressed when several of those listed objected. The pamphlet was redesigned and reprinted, and the original edition destroyed, though copies are perhaps not as uncommon as once thought. 12mo.

Description:
Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1968. First Edition. Wrappers. According to Morrow and Cooney (Bibliography of the Black Sparrow Press, 22), there were three paperbound issues of this book: 770 copies in oversized, untrimmed wrappers; 142 copies glued unevenly, and trimmed on all edges; and 26 copies from extra sheets intended for the hardbound edition, in trimmed wrappers, with colophon printed in blue (6 of which were used for presentation purposes). In addition, there were 69 copies handbound in boards. This copy, in wrappers trimmed flush, with colophon printed in blue, would then be one of the 20 such which were for sale. An early book of the press, in the numerically smallest issue. Some sunning to wrappers, otherwise a fine, unread copy. 8vo.

Description:
New York: Putnam, 1920. Later printing. 217 pp., 8.5 x 11.25 inches. Printed cloth over boards. Disbound; see comments. This copy of the second printing of Kent’s first book was marked up by a designer to be used as (or to accompany) setting copy for a new edition, most likely the Modern Library edition of 1930. The book has been disbound, the marked-up pages laid loose into the covers. (Note that most but not all pages are present; this is not a copy for a first reading!) Pencil markings indicate changes for the new format and design: text width, typeface and point sizes, alignments, galley breaks, and so on, with scattered notes and notations throughout (including at least one typographical error, an upside-down letter, caught by the designer). An unexpected and unusual survival of a process document, and clearly one-of-a-kind.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1966. First printing. 576 pp., square 8vo. Cover portrait by Duane Michals. Light tanning and soiling to edges, and one area of fading to cloth, otherwise about very good, in a dust-jacket lacking a four-inch-wide by two-inch-deep piece at the crown of the spine (the cause of the aforementioned fading). A wide-ranging journal of the years 1956¬Ė64, in prose, poetry, dialogues, and drawings, by a multifaceted architect, sculptor, painter, poet, stage designer, and restless experimenter, who died in 1965, while this book was still in production. An advance review copy, with the publisher's slip, inscribed a month before the official publication date by Lillian Kiesler, the author's wife: "For dear Jon, whose friendship was a pleasure to Frederick and me."
