Wilson exercised excellent control over his men, dealt smoothly with the natives... A common enough title, but this is a scarce imprint - an American edition of the London printing. Hill describes it thus - "The Wilmington edition of 1794... is an abridged account of the original edition of London, 1788. It was probably edited by Rev. Mason Locke Weems, who is best known for popularizing the story of George Washington and the cherry tree." See Hill 912. Evans 27177. Bound in early marbled paper over boards, which are rubbed. Owner's signatures dated 1795.

Encyclopedic in scope and handsomely executed, with American as well as British material. "Kemp was a central and extremely influential figure in yachting and yacht designing. His work is of great importance. In this volume he discusses displacement, buoyancy, proportions, steam engines, rigs, designing, building etc., and analyses forms of existing yachts." See Toy 4762. Toy considers Kemp a central figure in British yachting, citing this book's "crisp and authoritative instructions on... building, equipment, seamanship, open sailing boats, centre-board boats, sailing boats of the Clyde and Mersey... steam yachts, ice yachts, and canoeing."
