Description:
Wilmington (DE) : Rev. M.L. Weems, 1794. 12mo. iv, (1) 2-96 pp. This was one of the most popular of all shipwreck narratives, partly because of the happy ending, of the adventure and partly because of the detailed descriptions of the Pelew Islands natural features and society... Wilson exercised excellent control over his men, dealt smoothly with the natives... The crew set to work to build a schooner from native lumber, while some of their members fought for their hosts in native wars... Huntress 107C. A common enough title, but this is a scarce imprint - an American edition of the London printing. Hill describes it thus - "The Wilmington edition of 1794... is an abridged account of the original edition of London, 1788. It was probably edited by Rev. Mason Locke Weems, who is best known for popularizing the story of George Washington and the cherry tree." See Hill 912. Evans 27177. Bound in early marbled paper over boards, which are rubbed. Owner's signatures dated 1795.
