Description:
NORTH AFRICA, EGYPT, TUNISIA, BRITISH PALESTINE. Fair. 1943. On offer is a simply sensational, fascinating original World War II British RAF manuscript diary of an airman, named K. James Using a very interesting journal with portrait of an Egyptian pharaoh and North Africa maps as the endpapers. Our writer has inserted a block of papers used as a preface explaining the use of the diary he had charmingly dedicated to his parents. He also does a retrospective portion setting up the narrative. His signature ends the preface letter of explanation and then the actual entries begin dated May 14th 1943 through to winter of 1944 and then a final entry for February 23rd 1945. This airman has seen it all and been everywhere throughout the conflict in the Mediterranean and since the notebook is undated as diary goes his entries are long and very detailed. He begins with the end of the battle for Tunisia carries on with a most intimate, personal diary that besides the factual details of the War going… Read More

Kawaguchi, detailing Japan during the critical times before, during and immediately after the Russo-Japanese War being 1903-1906 to an American friend. 45th Troop Carrier Squadron. Good+. 1943. On offer is a fascinating, very detailed, very well filled pair [2] of World War II manuscript diaries handwritten by P.F.C. Gordon L. Kenney of Beacon, New York [b. February 8th noting his 21st birthday] serving in the distinguished 45th Troop Carrier Squadron. The 9 x 6 inch 1943 volume is written from a few days in February March through December (January is detailed within these months for some reason) with only a few pages left blank in this otherwise well filled book. Interestingly in April he writes: "This month was a very eventful and tragic affair. Cpl Miller got too curious on the 8th and blew a detonator cap up. He is still in the hospital having lost two fingers. Ike attempted suicide with 30 cal rifle; I went through my first bombing of Tripoli; I don't know exactly where we are or how many there are of us...we are at some water hole in the middle of the desert." Description:
VERSAILLES, FRANCE, 1792. Archive of two (2) handwritten letters, both dated January 14th, 1792, both physically attached at the bottom left corner with sealing wax. Very interesting: The first letter, beautifully penned, whose author's signature is indecipherable yet whose status as a 'ancient surgeon to the King' is foremost in presentation, tells of the story of a young boy named Colinot. The boy has been severely injured to the point of blood building up under his eye lids and that he required many sutures to the head and around the nose. The second letter, (in a much rougher handwriting style than the refined Chiel Surgeon), by M. DeLaBique recounts the same injuries, but as told to him by a M. George LaFleur, they were acquired in a street brawl between a group of young boys. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including… Read More

PITTSBURG PENNSYLVANIA DENVER COLORADO. Fair. 1884. On offer is an original, charmingly intimate, manuscript diary dated 1884 handwritten by Ella C. King from Pittsburg Pennsylvania but as the diary opens up on July 28th, 1884, we find Ella in Denver Colorado. While one would classify this as a travel diary in many ways it is more of an homage to the 'Mile-High City' as Ella is in love with the Rocky Mountains and on numerous occasions she mentions how she feels as though she might never visit this beautiful place again and becomes rather depressed at the thought. In fact at one point she is talking about how she is so in love with the mountains and says before she dies she will see them up close and follows that passage with…."If I only had one of the children and a horse of my own I would be so happy." In all she spends a little over 2 months in Denver. However while the 170 page narrative begins in the 5 ½" x 7 ½" notebook style journal a… Read More

Description:
Harvard, Massachusetts Mass MA. Good with no dust jacket. 1874. Softcover. On offer is a fine example of a student's English composition notebook dating from the 1870’s in Massachusetts. The owner of this notebook was Emeline Knight (1861-1937) of Harvard, Worcester, Massachusetts. The daughter of Jonathan Preston Knight (1823-1891) and Relief Phelps Dickinson (1826-1902) , Emeline was the third of four children born to her parents. She also had a half brother named Preston (1846-1916). Emeline lived mostly with her siblings throughout her adult life. She never married or had children. Records show that she worked as a teacher. This English composition book was kept when Emeline was 13-years-old, in 1874. The work in the book provides fascinating insight into the strict academic standards students such as Emeline were held to during this time period. The first several pages of the book contain a list of corrections Emeline must make on her written work, and includes one piece of… Read More
