Description:
San Francisco: Stolen Paper Review Editions, 1966. Later printing. Collection of four psychedelic erotic poems by Leonore Kandel (1932-2009) that led to an obscenity trial. This is a later printing of the First Edition, with a blue overprinting to the figures on the front cover. In May 1967, a jury in San Francisco found the book obscene and fined booksellers from the Psychedelic Shop and City Lights. Perhaps not surprisingly, that only made the book more popular. By the end of May, sales of The Love Book "had skyrocketed from a few dozen to at least twenty thousand." (Joy Lanzendorfer in The New Yorker, October 13, 2023). The verdict was overturned in 1971. PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo, 6 leaves, printed rectos only, in stapled, brown illustrated wrappers, blue overprinting to the Shiva-like figure and naked woman on the front cover (soft cover). CONDITION: Some edge wear and curling to corners. Internally, some creasing to pages. A Very Good copy.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1933. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Small Octavo (7 7/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 200 x 135 mm), ix, [1], 318 pages, in blue cloth, titles in silver to spine, in a printed dust jacket (hard cover). Biographical essays of some politicians and economists: Lloyd George, Bonar Law, Churchill, Trotsky, Malthus, Marshall, etc. Eight black-and-white plates, separated by tissue guards. One of Keynes's more interesting essays is about Trotsky, who had written "Where Is Britain Going?" Keynes is scathing: "Its dogmatic tone about our affairs, where even the author's flashes of insight are clouded by his inevitable ignorance of what he is talking about, cannot commend it to an English reader." But he hastens to add: "Yet there is a certain style about Trotsky." This book is quite scarce in the original dust jacket.
