In this 1819 paper Irving Langmuir (1881-1957) proposed a set of eleven postulates describing the arrangement of electrons in shells and layers, and used the postulates to derive the properties of the chemical elements. In the same paper he also coined the term "covalence." Langmuir was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for "for his discoveries and investigations in surface chemistry.". Pyotr Lebedev (1866-1912) used a very sensitive experiment to confirm Maxwell's prediction of the radiation pressure of light, and announced the finding at the World Physics Congress in Paris. viii, 876 pp. 8vo. Recent brown three quarter leather binding with dark leather spine and corners, four raised bands at spine with gold tilting. Interior clean with the only indication of ex-library being the "Withdrawn" stamp on the title page. Text in German.
