Oxford: Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1938. Hardcover. Very Good. pp 656 A comprehensive history of 19th century Britain and its relations with the colonies and Europe. Bound in blue cloth, very good, covers rubbed to spine ends, hinges starting to crack but the binding is firm, complete with six fold out maps. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. After she lost her husband Mary Wilson continued to live in the couple's flat, surrounded by a lifetime's accumulation of books and memories until 2016. Very Good 1938

London: Fulham & Hammersmith Historical Society Archaeological Section, 1973. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Short paper collating work resulting from observations of building sites by members of the society 1971 -73. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad. Very Good. 62 [2] Adverts, Gatefold Map Leatherbound guide to the Anglo Saxon architecture of Sussex with three interesting manuscript letters from the author laid in. The letters were written during January and February of 1919 to M I Bates, author of 'Blyth Past and Present'. In his first letter Jessep acknowledges the gift of Bates' 'little book' about the Nottinghamshire village. Written on Ordnance Survey headed notepaper Jessep discusses the disruption by the war of his plans for more county guides to Anglo-Saxon architecture. In the second letter Jessep touches on Heysham in Lancashire and and discusses St Patrick's Chapel there as well as Blyth Upper School. The sequence of letters is lively and informative with Jessep mentioning a series of other correspondents including the author of 'Highways and Byways in Nottinghamshire'.
