Manchester,Taylor,Garnett,Evans & Co.,1898, first edition,8vo, pp.160,folding map and numerous illustrations. Original cloth binding in very good condition. Local Historian Ernest Axon's copy with his signature and loosely inserted notes. Four original drawings of local buildings and scenes by W Pownall dated 1888/89 pasted to the endpapers. Contents a little well used by Axon, but a sound and interesting copy.

Cresset Press, 1927. Original parchment backed boards. Spine a little rubbed, covers a little marked, but very sound condition. One of 650 numbered copies.

Manchester and London,Sherratt & Hughes,1907, two volumes, 4to, pp.xv, 333, ix, 351. With very many illustrations including maps, plans, photographs, autograph letters, portraits etc. Volume 1 contains 5 loose plans in the rear pocket and volume 2 contains 2, as called for. Original brown cloth gilt, top edges gilt. Bindings somewhat rubbed and faded with a few marks here and there, but still very tight and sound. Some of the folding plates within the book have been misfolded at some time so are a bit creased and dusty at the edge, with some marks to the back of one. The plates in the pockets are very good. These impressive volumes are the major work on the Manchester ship canal. A very sound working set.

Worcester, 1867, pp. xci, 148, 48, (3), illustrations and folding coloured map. Original cloth a little frayed at head and tail of spine, else good condition. Author's compliments inside and a couple of names of early owners.

London, for the author, 1791. Includes "a Particular Account of the Royal Harem". Bound in full contemporary marbled calf, leather title label (little rubbed at one edge), complete with the folding map.Condition. Very light rubbing in places, endpapers browned at edges, some foxing to the map which has an old repair to the back, but a quite exceptionally attractive copy inside and out. This first edition is scarce; it is the second edition of 1793 which is more usually seen.

London, Locomotive Publishing, (1925), pp.xii, 202, with 8 folding maps and 8 plates. Original cloth, spine faded as usual, one map a bit mis-folded, neat repairs to a couple of the folding maps where they have torn in the usual place, but a good, sound copy. This is quite a scarce book, and greatly enlarged from the author's work of 1914 on the same subject.

London, Railway Gazette, 1936, first edition,pp.xx, 500. Best edition with the 13 maps (several folding) which are not included in the reprint. Original cloth, spine faded and bumped at top, but sound. Internally lacks fron free endpaper, repairs to several of the folding maps where they have torn at the usual place (the maps are on very flimsy paper). One single page map has slight damage from adhering to the adjacent map. A couple of stamps of the LNER Leeds Districf Goods Manager. Just a sound working copy.

Joseph Cockshoot Ltd, Manchester, (1948). Booklet of 47 stapled pages, card covers. 3000 copies printed, though only a fraction of those will have survived. Covers a bit foxed, creases to some pages, but sound condition. Makes mentioned include not only Rolls Royce and Ford, but Crossley, Rothwell, Newton Pearce, Bell Bros, Turrell etc.

Edizioni Galleria Levi, Milano, 1971. Profusely illustrated. Text in Italian. Very good condition in the dust jacket. Presentation inscription from the author to Tom Blau the prominent portrait photographer.

Bookplate of Sir Edward W Watkin, the great railway entrepreneur who became chairman of nine different railway companies.
