The author, a French lawyer, wrote the work in specific response to English cartographer Thomas Jefferys' Conduct of the French with Regard to Nova Scotia, (London: 1755), which set forth the English territorial claims. La Mettrie’s attacks on his colleagues in this and two other works and the atheistic views expounded in his Histoire naturelle de l’âme forced him to flee to Holland to escape arrest and imprisonment. There he published his most notorious book, L’Homme Machine (1748), the outspoken materialism and atheism of which proved too risqué even for the Dutch, and he was compelled to flee again, this time to the court of Frederick II of Prussia, where he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, as well as reader and physician to the King.
