[n.p.:] 1763 First edition? Several editions—all of them rare—appeared in 1763: we have been unable to establish an order of priority. Recently rebound in full sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine lettered gilt, new endpapers. . Small octavo. Paper flaw to p. [iv], affecting a few letters of text. A good, clean copy. The lawyer La Chalotais (1701-1785) was one of the leaders of the movement that led to the elimination of the Society of Jesus in France in the eighteenth century, and his Essai was written in part to provide a program of public education that would fill the gap caused by the closure of the Jesuit schools. A revolutionary work, it was one of the first to maintain that the principal aim of education is to ensure the effective functioning of society, and was widely acclaimed on its publication. Voltaire wrote to La Chalotais, "Vous intitulez l'ouvrage Essai d'un Plan d'Etudes pour les collèges [sic], et moi, je l'intitule: Instruction d'un homme d'Etat pour éclairer tous les…

A very good, clean copy This is an interesting collection of four dialogues between the fictional Cléanthe and Euthyme: I. Sur les plaisirs & sur les passions en général; II. Sur les mauvais penchans, & sur l'amour du plaisir; III. Sur les merite des femmes, & sur leur sensibilité pour l'honneur; IV. Sur le jugement que les plus grands Hommes & les plus célèbres Nations ont fait des Femmes. The author, whose dates are not known, was "Secretaire au Traité de la Paix de Riswick." This refers to the Ryswick Treaty of 1697, which ended the Nine Years War and forced Louis XIV to give up some of his territorial acquisitions. The book is dedicated to the author's "Altesse Royale Madame," and Dupuy la Chapelle states that he intends his book to defend the honor of women, and to foster a strong tenderness…

Contemporary ink inscription on upper front board. Light foxing and light intermittent toning. Leaves in gathering B slightly loose. Bookplate on front pastedown. A very good copy of a rare book, clean and tight. Marie-Elisabeth Lafite (1737-1794), who was born in Hamburg, became the wife of a Hugenot minister from La Haye. She collaborated with her husband to produce the periodical Bibliotheque des sciences et des beaux arts. She also wrote several books on education, including Nouvelle Idee Sur L'Education, strongly influenced by Madame de Genlis. With "A Footnote to the Loves of MA" leaf laid in. Toning to first and last leaf and some offsetting from the initials and vignettes. A near fine copy. Description:
[Laguna Beach, California: Laguna Verde Imprenta], 1990 One of fifty copies printed by Ward Ritchie on an Albion hand press. This is Ritchie's penultimate publication. It is a collection of his own poetry, published under his long-standing pseudonym, Peter Lum Quince. Black paper wrappers with printed paper label. . Octavo. Illustrated by Paul Landacre with woodcut headpieces and an array of small geometric woodcuts on title-page. Text printed in black by Ward Ritchie on an Albion handpress. Illustrations in red, orange, green, brown, and blue. Wrappers a bit scuffed. Still a fine copy, inscribed on the half-title by Ritchie to Jake Chernofsky, longtime editor of AB Bookman's Weekly. A foreword explains the origin of Ritchie's "Peter Lum Quince" pseudonym: "The author obviously assumed his pseudonym from the Peter Quince created by Shakespeare. However, the irreverent printer, more interested in creating a pleasing title page…inserted the random letters LUM to balance the length of the wood…

Description:
A la Haye: Chez Pierre De Hondt, 1759 First published in 1740, this is an imitation of Marivaux's Vie de Marianne (1731-41), which was considered a great advancement in the novel form and influenced Rousseau, Restif de la Bretonne and Fielding. The author is Claude-François Lambert (1705-65), who published miscellaneous works, including an imitation of Abbé Prevost's Mémoires et avantures d'un homme de qualité, which he called Memoires et avantures d'une dame de qualité (1739). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label. Edges stained red, marbled endpapers. . Ten parts in one volume, twelvemo. Two small cracks along front joint. A very good, clean copy. This edition is unknown to OCLC, which lists only the 1740 and 1772 editions. Description:
London: F. Fayram, 1730 First edition. Contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked, . Twelvemo. A very good copy. Charles Lamotte (1681?-1741) is known almost solely for the present work; he receives no mention in the D.N.B. There is, however, a substantial entry on him in the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers. John Valdimir Price writes: "Lamotte's concern…is with 'License' or what other aestheticians called decorum. Poets and painters are allowed 'some Degree of Licence,' but the analogies and linkings that they make should never venture into absurdity or anachronism. The proper enjoyment of painting or drama depends on an awareness of its fidelity to historical truth and of its consonance with the general experience of mankind." Price goes on, "…he never loses sight of the power of painting or poetry to corrupt and to deprave," but notes that "there is a refreshing lack of cant and proselytizing in his work." A second edition appeared in Dublin in 1742.

London: Printed for the Author; and sold by L. Hawes…[et al.], 1764 First edition. Recent tan calf over marbled boards, Gilt-ruled spine with crimson morocco label. . Quarto. Five engraved folding plates. With list of subscribers. A little light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce book. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this, his most important work, he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." A second volume was planned, but it never appeared. According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings…

In the midst of it all, Miss Landis even found time to fall in love and get married" (from the dust jacket). . Publisher's red cloth binding titled in teal on spine. Octavo. With two double-sided photo plates (including frontispiece) capturing stills from the Twentieth Century Fox film Two Jills in a Jeep (1944) and about two dozen charming text vignettes by Lily Cushing.
