Description:
The First UK printing published by Faber & Faber, London in 1964. The BOOK is in near fine condition with just a hint of offsetting to the half-title. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book is a presentation copy, inscribed by the author shortly after publication to the front blank end-paper : 'Inscribed very gladly for June Buttery, Philip Larkin, 9 iii 64'. It is highly likely that the recipient, Jane buttery was the wife of Tom Cliff Buttery, the headmaster of Princes' Street Junior school, Wellington, Shropshire and acquaintance of Philip Larkin. Larkin's breakthrough collection (arguably the most significant volume of poetry published in England since Eliot's 'The Waste Land'). A very elusive title to find signed with only 4 signed copies having appeared at auction in the last 20 years. Housed in a custom green solander box with marbled inserts, a silk tie and gilt titling. Laid-in is the 'Poetry Book Society… Read more
