Description:
9 March 1816. 4 x 9 inches, some old repairs to verso, of good appearance. Jane Jackson (1776-1858), first appeared at a London concert on 25 April 1798, and sang as Miss Jackson at the Concert of Ancient Music in 1800. That same year she married the composer Francesco Bianchi; while Mrs Bianchi she often sang at Windsor in the presence of George III and Queen Charlotte. She and Bianchi soon separated, he died in 1810, and she married William Lacy, bass singer, in 1812, singing as Mrs Bianchi Lacy until 1815. Considered one of the finest interpreters of Handel as well as a good pianist and painter, she was noted for her grand, simple style and perfect delivery of Italian. Through her friendship with R.M. Bacon, portions of Bianchi’s celebrated manuscript theory treatise were published in early volumes of the Quarterly Musical Magazine.

Wednesday night, undated. 2 pp. 5 x 4 inches Uncommon. Edward William Lane (1801– 1876), Orientalist, translator and lexicographer. He travelled to Egypt (1825-28, 1833-35) and published Manners and Customs of the Egyptians (1836). He is known for his translation of One Thousand and One Nights. In 1842 Lane began his great Arabic Dictionary; it was published in five parts (1863-75). “If you reject it, I shall be greatly obliged by your not telling the Bookseller that I have dissuaded you, if you can devise any other excuse; for he is at present engaged in a negociation of the utmost importance to me, & I am terribly afraid of displeasing him. Of this I will tell you more when we next meet.”

24 South Bank, St. John’s Wood, 13 December 1834. 1¼ pages 9 x 7 inches, integral address leaf (torn at seal opening), neat title label affixed. From the Enys Collection. Richard James Lane (1800 - 1872), was a prolific Victorian engraver and lithographer. The National Portrait Gallery has some 850 lithographs of his portraits and figure studies, done between 1825 and 1850. Davies Gilbert (1767–1839), scientific administrator and applied mathematician, who chaired numerous parliamentary committees, drafting and shepherding many items of legislation.

Paris, 20 February 1809. In French. 1 page 10 x 7½ inches, annotated on receipt, printed heading of the Bibliotheque Impériale, integral blank leaf (remains of guard). Louis-Mathieu Langlès (1763 – 1824), French philologist, linguist, translator, author, librarian and orientalist. He was the conservator of the oriental manuscripts at the Bibliothèque Impériale. Langlès corresponded with William Jones in Calcutta; and he was responsible for including the history and bibliography of the early publications of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in the third volume of the Magasin Encyclopédique. The 1811 edition of Jean Chardin's Voyages de monsieur le chevalier Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient (The Travels of Sir John Chardin in Persia and the Orient), was edited by Langlès. His published works included Monuments anciens et modernes de l’Hindoustan; Alphabet Mantchou; and Instituts Politiques et Militaires de Tamerlan.
