Amsterdam: [ ], 1764. The most beautiful of the reproductions of the «des fermiers généraux» edition. (This was first issued in 1762). The illustrations includes a portrait of La Fontaine as the frontispiece of the first volume, 65 vignettes including 1 on each of the engraved titles, 2 full page vignettes, and 2 woodcut vignettes to the contents page. And of course the 80 plates engraved by Charles Boily from Eisen's compositions. Most of the vignettes are after Choffard. The portrait of La Fontaine is engraved by Macret after Ficquet. Half calf. This has been recently restored, with the original leather sympathetically laid onto a new spine. Mottled boards. Minimal rubbing. Internally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening only. A few minor marks and edgewear to the pages, but nothing to detract from the enjoyment of this copy. The armorial stamp of the Earl of Malmesbury is in gilt to both the front and rear board. The front board is pretty loose, just holding, and the rear board is completely detached - but still present! Chipping with a little loss to both the top and bottom edge of the spine. Internally, a good, wide margined and clean copy. Title with engraved printer's mark / vignette. Paris: Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, 1820. A lovely collection of 131 beautifully hand coloured fashion engravings from "‎Le Journal des Dames et des Modes de l'Empire..." Without any explanatory text. Each plate is entitled "Costumes Parisiens." The first plate is dated 12 (1803) the last is from 1830. The contemporary quarter leather binding has a deep red spine with gilt design and titles. red cloth boards. A little rubbing to both. Inside the plates are in good, clean condition, with a few foxing spots here and there. A very nice collection. Each plate is hand coloured. They measure 110 by 118mm (4¼ by 4¾ inches) The "Journal des dames et des modes" was inspired by the "Revue de La Mésangère". (Colas 1565; Lipperheide, zb 15; Hiler, 486). Justification / colophon to the verso. 2 pages of the "Argument" 2 sample full page engravings, pages 119 - 122 to show text and a coloured illustration. Overall a decent copy of this bibliographical work. The leather boards are clean and tidy, with a little rubbing and bumping to them. Very slight cracking to the edges, but no loss. Internally, the book is generally clean and tidy. The end paper has a large tear, with loss of about a third of the end paper. The rest of the book is in excellent condition. The Ruggieri brothers were French pyrotechnic experts of the Eighteenth Century. The family assembled a collection of over 1500 books on the subject of festivals or fétes. Important as there is no standard bibliography of the subject. Here is the bibliography of this collection. Although a facsimile, this has additional author and title indexes making it more usable. Full of charming biographies of French poets. For example, Bernis begins "What a shame for the people of France that this charming poet abandoned it so early." Paris: Mercure de France, 1947. An attractive, half leather bound copy of Laforgue's poetry. This was originally published as two volumes in softback as part of the Oeuvres complètes. Here the two volumes have been bound as one. Red leather spine with gilt raised bands, titles and decorations. The red leather is somewhat faded to the spine (but uniformly). To the front board, the leather has faded a little more to the top than to the rest. Red buckram boards. The whole is a little rubbed, but overall clean and tidy. Half title, and title to volume one, with date and publisher's details. Then follows the the poems themselves, and finally the contents of volume one. This same pattern is repeated for volume 2.
