THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE AND INTERESTING BOOK. ITS RARITY IS LIKELY DUE TO IT BEING PUBLISHED IN ENGLAND AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WAR. The author traveled extensively about the United States with emphasis on the post-War South, 1867 to be exact. His detailed journal is chronological and reported by the city he visited. There are supplemental chapters on the Negro, the Indian and his possible extermination, the Finians (little known incident involving Canada) and the Alabama claims. Overall the author was impressed by Americans and their friendliness. Not in Nevins. Howes L-117.

St. Louis: Press A.R. Fleming, 1909. First. HB. Decorative front board. Hinges perfect, colors vivid./No Jacket. THIS A RARE ONE, CONTAINS LETTERS FROM SOLDIERS SERVING IN THE 3RD AND 4TH NORTH CAROLINA INFANTRY. THERE IS A LENGTHY INSCRIPTION ON THE FFEP AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR IN 1918.

Richmond: West and Johnston, 1864. Stated Second, Revised and Enlarged. Wraps. Front wrap missing, rear wrap separated. But text in very good shape and held tight. Very useable.. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT, AND A RARE ONE! THERE IS A RECORD OF AN 1863 EDITION, BUT IT WAS MUCH SMALLER, LESS THAN 200 PAGES. THIS EDITION IS 308 PAGES LONG. IT LIKELY COMES WITH EXPANDED AND ADDED APPENDICES. Parrish and Willingham 4905. Crandall 2442. This a manual that every military court would have. There is an almost identical Union manual. It contains detailed instructions on a multitude of legal situations such as hangings, floggings, dismissals, court procedures, etc. Housed in a handsome custom made box.

This did not injure the text./None.. This is an unusual and scarce book. It has information on the discovery and development of Old Northwest which included much of today's Upper Midwest. Contains information on Ft. Snelling, Ft. Edwards, Ft. Calhoun and numerous forts constructed in Iowa.Central to this narrative is the Sioux uprising in Minnesota and Northern Iowa. Many of the men who volunteered for service in the Civil War never got there. They were formed into a brigade that fought Indians in the area mentioned. The story is sympathetic to the Native Americans.

THREE VOLUMES The three volumes are titled Illustrated Atlas of the Civil War, Arms and Equipment of the Union, and Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy. The set is like all Time Life books, outstanding photography and organization. Probably not good reference material but very enjoyable reading. A beautiful set.

Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina, 1939. First. Hard Bound. VG/VG. Both sides of this issue are presented. The narrative is thoroughly researched as evidenced by 35 pages of bibliography. The author states an interesting conclusion: If words could fix the problem it would have as everything was said. Although not stated it appears bloodshed was inevitable. A scholarly study.

Boston: George Russell, 1870. First. Hard Bound. VG/None. The story of a man taken with himself. An entertainer who traveled about The Eastern Theater. Nevins I-122. Dornbusch II-2198.

NY: Putnams, 1918. First. Hardbound. VG. Book is square and tight with the spine lettering faded but easily readable./None. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY LONN. Another scholarly narrative by a respected historian. She authored NOT ONE, BUT TWO In Tall Cotton books and others of significance. This is a period of much turbulence and violence surrounding voting. Not in Nevins or other bibliographies. This is the first copy of this title I have seen and may be the most difficult of her works to acquire.

NY: Ogden, Thulstrup, Davidson, etal, 1912. A later gathering of the photos. Wraps in a folder. The 16 parts VG+, binder G/G+./None. An overlooked compilation of Civil War photos. Many, many Brady photographs along with other noted period photographers. Excellent narrative to support the photos.This series came out about prior to the Miller set which became the popular set to own. Lossing's work is dated to 1895 while Miller's has a 1911/12 publication date. Nonetheless this 1912 Lossing work stands by itself. It is in 16 parts, each a wrapper offering, all encased in a tie-type binder. The parts are near fine, the binder did its job in protecting the parts and is just G/G+. If interested in Civil War photography, this is a must have set. What makes this set extra special are the colored plates in each of the 16 issues. (See one in pictures). There are 15 that are near fine and one VG. These alone are worth the price of the set. There is a slight increase in postage to handle the set.
