Free Air by Sinclair Lewis (London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd, [No Date] circa 1935). The Readers Library published affordable editions of popular fiction in the period 1924-35, cheaply produced but very attractive with their wrap-round dustwrapper artwork. Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), American author and playwright and winner of the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature. A novel about a motoring tour of the United States and originally published by New York publisher Harcourt, Brace and Howe (1919), this copy a later undated reprint from Readers Library. The British Library (usually reliable) suggests 1932 however the series number of 444 for this title would indicate circa 1935 (No. 433 Cleopatra published 1935*). Hardback. The classic adventure story of pirates, the high seas and black spots by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) was originally serialised in the magazine 'Young Folks' (1881-2), then published in book form by Cassell (1883). This illustrated edition by Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was originally published in 1927 in limited and trade editions.
Interestingly, although this copy has '1st printed in 1927' to title page verso leading to the assumption this is a first edition, the standard Dulac bibliography by Hughey* states this is a later printing/issue circa 1929. The first trade edition has the date MCMXXVII to foot of title page and bound in tan cloth.
