Description:
Paris: Lefevre, 1836. Large 8vo. (243 x 155 mm). With 5 full-page steel-engraved plates printed on India paper and mounted on thick paper (tissue guards foxed as commonly, with offsetting on plates and text opposite). Contemporary French dark red polished calf, covers scuffed spine darkened and a little worn at head and tail, corners bumped, but an attractive binding, perfectly sound and completely unsophisticated. With faults, and priced correctly. Late Empire binding by Rene Simier (1772-1843) of restrained elegance, exhibiting his unsurpassed technical ability. In the nineteenth century, Simier "pere" - with Joseph Thouvenin - brought the art of French bookbinding to its apogee. In his long and distinguished career Simier was appointed binders to Empress Marie-Louise, Louis XVIII, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicily (subsequently Duchesse de Berry). According to Ramsden ("French Bookbinders 1789-1848") Simier's "variety and technique were superb; he had no superior and few rivals during his career."… Read more

Contemporary beige quarter calf, patterned brown cloth sides, gilt armorial device of the Duc d'Arenberg on both covers. Slight wear to spine. Slight foxing throughout. Also included are reproductions of the WATERMARKS of said documents. All of these precious documents were incinerated during the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870. Description:
Paris: L. Giraud Badin, 1929. Softcover. Very good. 16.5 x 25 cm. 8vo. 2 vols. I: xvi, 320 pp.; II: 355 pp. Uncut and largely unopened. Original pale blue printed wrappers (spines faded to brown, otherwise excellent). Beautiful copy, largely unopened, of the foremost bibliography on the subject of French "Keepsakes" of Gift Books, still unsurpassed. Our copy is completely free of all library labels, markings, foxing, etc. which disfigures most copies currently available. KEEPSAKES: These were small annual or "gift" volumes designed primarily for the Christmas and New Year market, popular in many countries in the first half of the 19th-century. These "Forget-Me-Not" volumes consisted primarily of poetry and short pieces of prose. The main emphasis was on the wood- and steel-engraved illustrations, and indeed some of the leading artists of the day produced illustrations for Keepsakes. Of additional interest are the ornate publishers' bindings in cloth, silk, and leather, frequently with extravagant… Read more

Description:
Together seven three-ring binder notebooks (binders worn, boards on vol. VI broken off) -- retained by us as out of "respect du fonds" -- containing approximately 876 typescript and manuscript pages. TOGETHER WITH: 29 file folders of articles, ideas, proposals, and miscellaneous publishing materials, consisting of approximate 300 typescript and manuscript pages, housed in a new Hollinger box. TOGETHER WITH: two of Lasker's passports (1921 and 1926) and a large b/w studio portrait photograph (undated). An important discovery. This is the private, largely unpublished literary archive of the noted social reformer Bruno Lasker (1880-1965), containing well over a thousand pages of typed and hand-written manuscripts. These writings date from 1923 until the year of his death in 1965. Lasker's social work is well known, and concerned racial prejudice and justice, trafficking and human rights, immigration and immigrants' rights, poverty in America and economic inequality. The present literary archive is… Read more

Description:
S.l.: s.n., 1684. Softcover. Very good. n.d. (but ca. 1684). 4to. 8 pp. Large woodcut headpiece, 6-line woodcut initial. Stitched in modern wrappers. Some wear, dust-soiling, evidence of folding. Two tax stamps (one on title, the other on final leaf). Suitable for exhibition and study. Scarce and very early Royal statutes for the Guild of Barbers, Bath Men, and Wigmakers of Orleans, not found in CCFr, Worldcat, or KVK. Our copy features contemporary manuscript annotations which highlight the development of these regulations by date. Guild statutes awarded master Barbers and Wigmakers exclusive control over the hair industry. "The Guild was uniquely organized on the basis of a royal charge that wigmakers purchased prior to becoming guild masters. Non-masters who ran independent wigmaking enterprises committed a crime against the social order that was taken seriously by the state [...] Despite guild regulations to the contrary, illicit wigmakers, through their continuous presence, expanded their… Read more

Description:
Unbound. Very good. 4to. [16] pp. comprised of 8 half sheets folded once, unstitched, edges untrimmed. First leaf soiled, some dust-soiling throughout. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve with lig-free board backing. Highly curious French legal manuscript concerning a rare 1543 Ordonnance on taxes on salt for preserving fish, a matter not only of national but international significance. The first and only edition of the "Ordonnance" was printed by Etienne Roffet in 1543, together with an Edict on lifting the Salt Tax (as here). While the Roffet tracts have never been reprinted in full, and only one copy has survived (at BnF), it is unlikely that the present MS is a direct copy because the Roffet edition is 36 pages in length, and is likewise a small 4to. The rarity of the Ordonnances is attested by the fact that even as early as the mid-18th century, no printed copy could be procured; that a MS was commissioned is self-evident, but by whom, or for what purpose, is no longer clear. There can be no doubt… Read more

Description:
Germany (?), n.d. (but WWI era). Leaflet printed on thin paper, recto only, measuring approximately 8 1/4 inches by approximately 6 1/2 inches, single fold, torn around edges, staining at the top. WORDS AS SWORDS, HASTILY PRINTED ON CHEAP PAPER: PSYCHOLOGICAL WEAPONS IN THE TRENCHES. An astonishing WWI relic of Germany's Psy-Ops on Allied troops, this battered leaflet was carefull left for an Allied soldier on the battlefield. It was in "The Great War" that modern psychological operations began, resulting from faster and more efficient printing, and the ability to distribute propaganda leaflets by airplane to enemy soldiers and civilians alike. We have seen reference to two other examples of our leaflet: both were found by Allied soldiers inside trenches that the German army had just vacated, in other words: NOT scattered randomly by air, but "delivered by hand" to -- and from -- unknown enemies. A "sister" leaf is at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin: it was printed on the same type of paper and… Read more

Front and back cover plus 4 other pages printed in color, the rest monochrome (printed in blue/green) allowing for hand-coloring. Very worn and partially defective, priced accordingly. Not in OCLC. We love antique children's books that are festooned with cats, so what's not to like about this vintage coloring book? Several well-known illustrators contributed to it, including Florence Notter, Lillian A. Govey, G.F. Christie, Rosa C. Petherick (1871-1931), Stuart Barker, and Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964). The present edition appears earlier than Donohue's (likewise undated) "Pussy Picture Book" which depicts four cats circling a Jack-In-The-Box on the front cover.
