Description:
Portland, OR: Artist, 2020. Original work. (40) pp., 5.75 x 10.5 inches. Unique altered book, sewn into card covers collaged with cloth and paper. The latest collage book from Cynthia Lahti, best known for her ceramic and mixed-media sculptures and her drawings. Lahti has repurposed the July 1967 issue of Workers Quarterly, published in Chicago by the Walther League, a Lutheran youth organization, covering all of its surfaces. The book contains 18 double-page spreads, each an independent collage, plus the inner and outer covers. Lahti’s collage books draw their imagery from a wide range of sources, often including books from her own childhood.

Description:
Schwäbisch-Hall, Germany: Anne Büssow, 2020. Original work. (55) pp., 12.75 x 16.5 inches. Unpublished poems from the Robert Lax Archives at St. Bonaventure University, chosen, hand-lettered, and illustrated with original ink drawings by the artist. Unique copy, hand-bound by Roger Green and housed in a card slipcase; for ease of reading, all of the hand-lettered texts are also presented on printed sheets tucked into a pocket inside the back cover of the book. New. Over the past decade, Anne Büssow has issued a series of limited-edition books that print unpublished Robert Lax texts, which she has selected from the material in the Lax archives and illustrated with woodcuts and lithographs. For this one-of-a-kind book of drawings, she chose nine poems in the form of (or suggesting) dialogues between two voices. The ink drawings range from simple still lifes to thickly layered compositions using words of the texts, and combinations of the two; the hand-lettering itself also varies greatly in… Read more

Cambridge, MA: West End Press, 1978. First Edition. Wrappers. First edition of this extraordinary short novel, reprinted many times yet still vastly underappreciated. Though the first draft was written in 1939, and sections were published as stories in following years, the author extensively revised and rewrote the entire manuscript in preparation for this edition. With afterwords by LeSueur and three others. "This memorial to the great and heroic women of the depression was really written by them..." Leipzig and Berlin: C. F. Peters, c. 1870. Later printing. (429) pp., 7.75 x 10.75 inches. Full leather over boards, with marbled edges and gilt-stamped front cover. Wear and small losses to extremities, tear to front pastedown due to binding/gluing flaw, still essentially very good. Original photographic portrait of Frances Striegel Burke laid in (7 x 9 inches; one closed tear and a few mild corner creases, not affecting image). A copy of the complete sonatas of Beethoven (thirty-eight in total, including the additional six easy sonatas), in the “edition nouvelle, revue critiquement” issued in four cahiers (this being the combined version in a single volume), with distinguished provenance, having once belonged to Theodore Leschetizky (1830–1915), the acclaimed Polish pianist, teacher, and composer. Leschetizky presented this volume in the late 1890s to his student Frances Striegel Burke, who subsequently passed it on to her student Gertrude Lachner Havnaer, whose son and student James Havnaer was… Read more

Description:
New York: Viking Press, 1965. First printing. 78 pp., 9.25 x 7.75 inches. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. A very fine copy, a trifle dusty on the top edge, with the very slight toning of pages present in virtually all copies, in a sparkling, near fine jacket that has trivial touches of wear at the corners, minuscule chips at the top of the spine, and a couple of mild creases along the edges. Levitt's first book, a classic collection of more than fifty of her New York City street photographs, mostly of children and their games and chalk drawings, shot in the 1940s and printed beautifully in gravure, with an essay by James Agee, written in the late 1940s when the book was first planned, but left unpublished at his death in 1955. Cited in all major reference guides to photobooks, including “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” by Andrew Roth, “The Photobook: A History” by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, and “The Open Book” by Andrew Roth.

Description:
Houston, TX: Quixote Press, 1980. First printing. (75) pp., 8.5 x 10.75 inches. Perfect-bound in plain card covers. Edited and assembled by Melissa Bondy and Morris Edelson, and with an introduction by Edelson. Forty-five pages of text and thirty-two pages of illustrations; twenty-two color reproductions of full-page collages, and twenty-four quarter-page images of smaller collages and concrete poems, mostly in black-and-white (thus forty-six images in total). Pages very slightly age-toned but internally very good; corners mildly bumped and plain white card covers lightly soiled, with 1/8-inch closed tears at top and bottom of spine. An uncommon posthumous selection, with poems drawn from various levy publications. The color illustrations have the distinctive sheen and saturation of early color photocopies. Though found in a number of institutional collections, this gathering seems quite elusive in the trade.
