First US edition, likely second printing, decorative hardcover, circa 1887/88. Identification of first editions is complicated and is partially addressed below. Overall condition is good. Boards show moderate patina, wear especially to edges and corners. Prior owner's stamp on front blank, moderate foxing to title page and last few pages of ads, occasional smudge, no tears or folds. Hinges and gutters starting but should hold with proper handling. Paginates: blanks, 384, 24, blanks plus 12 unpaginated plates. All edges gilt. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Popular British author with this title being one of his better known works. An example of early science fiction with a flying submarine. More Notes: True 1st ed. are 1887 by Blackie & Son, London with 1887 date on title page. Most US 1st edition books in this series had a date on the title page but is not the case with this title. This copy with "Christmas, 1886" date at top of ads in back. The first ad is for G. A. Henty's… Read More

Description:
First edition pamphlet, circa 1892. Condition is Very Good: Some toning around edges of wraps. Small chips, small closed edge tears and minor corner wear on some pages. Staples with some rust. No interior writing or vandalism. Pages are bright. Wraps are attached but delicate especially in front. Paginates: wraps, (1)-32. Somewhat uncommon pamphlet. WorldCat locates approximately 20 physical copies. See OCLC: 166586224 and 2599901. See McDade (Annals of Murder) 6. This pamphlet has two laid in adverts for another pamphlet "Life, trial, and confession of Sawtell" (AKA: Trial of Isaac Sawtell; AKA: History of the Murder of Hiram Sawtell by his brother Isaac Sawtell. McDade 852.) The laid in ads are the most ephemeral of ephemera. A collectible item in like condition. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although author and date are not present one may make an educated guess. Murder was committed November, 1891 with trial shortly thereafter. These pamphlets would have been published at… Read More

Description:
Hardcover, 1554 Paris edition. Condition is very good. 19th century full leather binding, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paginates by leaves (1 leaf=2 pages): 127, plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp, and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple, lightly toned, not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23, 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero (same as ownership stamp). No other writing or markings. A small book approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: I think first edition of this collection is 1530 (see OCLC: 925369798). And just so you know: the English translation of the title is my own and could be completely wrong.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Description:
First edition, first printing, hardcover. Very good or better. Prior owner's stamp in front; bookseller's stamp in rear; all else excellent. Before America entered WW1 Germany made a concerted propaganda effort to persuade the citizens of the United States to join Germany or at least stay out of the conflict. To this end Germany published a pamphlet titled "The Truth About Germany" (published by Trow, undated). Some Americans took offense and wrote responses. This book is one of them. Another is "One American's Opinion of the European War" by Frederick Whitridge, 1914 (also listed). A few years ago books of these sort were interesting propaganda artifacts. Today they remind us that propaganda appeals to Americans by hostile foreign governments are nothing new. History tells all. Please see scans of the book you will receive.
