Dust jacket not present. Ma Huan's descriptions are based on personal observation of twenty countries from Champa (Central Vietnam) in the East to Mecca in the West. Ma Huan was the Muslim interpreter of the famous Cheng Ho, commander of the Chinese Fleet. Of the sources for the history of southern Asia during the 15th century, the Chinese authorities are the most rewarding, and of these the most informative and interesting is Ma Huan.

First edition, 8vo, pp. 185; elaborate pictorial dedication, title, and copyright pages, photographic portrait of Mabie tipped in, 26 plates after Edwards printed in brown, and head- and tail-pieces throughout; original dark green cloth-covered boards, pictorial front cover stamped and lettered in red and gilt, the spine lettered in gilt, and t. e. g.; light wear to extremities with spine ends beginning to fray and several small areas of red chipped away; externally handsome and bright, but textblock and plates waterstained throughout to bottom half/quarter of pages, some red tidemarks on plates. This copy enhanced by presentation inscription from Mabie to book and bookplate collector Charles Dexter Allen, and with Allen's bookplate mounted to front pastedown.

Second edition, 12mo, 180pp., full contemporary mottled calf, double gilt-ruled border, gilt-paneled spine, red morocco label; spine extremities chipped, upper joint cracked, spine darkened and with old library sticker at the base; internally quite clean; a good copy. The texts of four letters addressed to John Adams on observations made in the United States, primarily on its government and laws. Sabin 42923 noting a handful of editions in both French and English; JCB 1772-1800, 2978.

Author address pressure-stamped at top right-hand corner. A friendly note addressed to "Mrs Hay," who had evidently written Macaulay a fan letter after reading her book "Fabled Shore: from the Pyrenees to Portugal" (1949), an account of journeying through Spain and Portugal: "I liked so much to get your nice letter telling me of your time in Spain, and feel delighted that my 'Fabled Shore' was useful to you. I am glad you liked Vinaroz, and of course Tarragona is magnificent. I am sorry you could not get on to Sagunto too; you would find it fascinating.
