Olivier de Magny (1529-1561), French poet "of Cohors, a follower of Ronsard and a successful author of familiar odes and sonnets, written in an easy style." (Oxford Companion to French Literature).

Original brown pictorial cloth decorated in gilt, black, white, and dark blue, octavo, xiv, 400 pp, 64 b/w photo plates (most with 2 images per plate) color map frontis. A native of Oregon, Markham wrote one of the most popular poems of all time; "The Man With the Hoe." In "California the Wonderful" Markham's poetic sensibilities make for compelling descriptions of the land and people of the West Coast of the US. Great illustrations. This copy with tipped in signed inscription by the author: "Victory attend you in all your words and ways. Edwin Markham." Bookplate of early 20th-century financier and California booster J. The second edition was first published in 1832 and included the maps which are omitted in this later reprint. Sabin notes that the 2 edition does not include "the early Continental history."
