Macleod was a surgeon stationed in Smyrna and Sebastopol during the Crimean war; the first war to use rifled and breech-loading cannons, which had longer ranges and greater accuracy, penetrating power, and rate of fire than the old smoothbore cannons. The binding is tight and strong, but the last 2 sections were misbound, and the edges are discolored. The red covers are near fine. Dustjacket stained on spine and flap edges, with price intact.
