William Brown Macdougall (1868 - 1936) was a Scottish artist, wood engraver, etcher and book illustrator, whose motifs reflected influence of Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts.

Scarce first edition, metaphysical meanderings of Baron Mackenzie, leading to biological questions about the size of the brain and intelleigence, among other things. Rebound in full mottled leather, gilt rules and cevices front and back, more gilt and red later label on spine. 8vo, vi, (2), 301, foldout plate of outlines of skulls. Covers slightly bowed, as the book has been pressed down after being water-soaked. Some "crinkling" of ;leaves remains, as does light staining to some sections of the book, largely confined to wide margins. Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet (1780-1848) was a Scottish geologist, chemist, agricultural improver, and author perhaps best known for "Travels in the Island of Iceland" (1807).

Lugdunibatauorum: Joannis Maire, 1634. Hardcover. Very Good. Early legal treatise written by James Masterton, who published in Latin under the name "Jacobo Maestertio." He was born in Flanders in 1610 and travelled around Europe, before becoming Professor of Law at Leiden University in 1630. Small piece missing at top of slightly darkened spine, minor spottting to covers, corners rubbed and darkened. Spine cracked at front hinge, signatures visible, surprisingly firm regardless. Pages uniformly toned.

Copy owned by English fencer and antiquarian Alfred Hutton (1839 - 1910) and bound in the customary fashion for which his library was known, this title in half vellum over brown cloth - with red leather lettering pieces and gilt decorations on the spine and Hutton's name in Gothic type and his armorial crest blocked in gold on the upper covers, gte, ribbon marker. A very sound copy, firmly bound, vellum moderately soiled, some incidental foxing here and there internally, but quite nice overall. 20thC ownership name ffe. Fifteen loose folio sheets, five of which are drawings, laid into a cloth chemise. Printed by Cleto Arcea in Alburquerque. Slight wear to the chemise covers, internally fine.
