One of the main aims of this work is to help to ensure the survival of a precious, but fragile, natural heritage by encouraging a growing appreciation of these beautiful creatures. Some of these birds are under threat and we cannot be sure that they won't one day become extinct. Hopefully, we can learn from the sad fate of the famous Dodo, which has become a symbol of the island of Mauritius where it lived in blissful isolation until the coming of man. The book… Read More

Description:
London: Collins. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The complete set of the New Naturalist Monographs in dust jackets, all first editions. NMN 21, The Trout is ex-library (canceled). Some of the dust jackets have minor chipping and some small bits of insect chewing. A complete list of the monographs is available. Overall a near fine set. In 1945, Collins, of St. James Place, London published Butterflies, the first title in the New Naturalist Library, a series of books on British Natural History in iconic dust jackets, with the aim of interesting the general reader in the wildlife of Britain by recapturing the enquiring spirit of the old naturalists. Within a few years, Collins perceived a need to narrow the focus by producing 'New Naturalist Special Volumes' with each title devoted to a single species and thus was born the New Naturalist Monographs. Twenty-two monographs were published, beginning with The Badger in 1948 and ending with The Mole in 1971.

Description:
Bradt Travel Guides, 2022. Paperback. New. A new, updated version of the celebrated 1968 title, Galapagos: Islands of Birds, by the renowned late ornithologist Bryan Nelson, with additional, previously unpublished reminiscences and lively and irreverent memories from his wife June. This timely reissue breathes new life into a classic work of natural history that will appeal to bird-lovers and Galapagos-lovers alike. It is as memorable for its groundbreaking descriptions of Galapagos wildlife as for June's naked appearance in the News of the World accompanied by a quote from the Duke of Edinburgh. In 1964 the late Bryan Nelson, a zoologist, and his wife June spent a year living on two uninhabited, waterless Galapagos islands studying the three species of booby (‘we couldn't resist also studying the great frigatebird and waved albatross, too' says June). Bryan's book, Galapagos: Islands of Birds was published in 1968 and, although by necessity a scientific study, his light touch and the… Read More

Description:
University of Georgia Press, 2015. Hardcover. New. In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby cataloged the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Mark Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination combined with insatiable curiosity and multiple talents. Nevertheless no portrait of him is known. The international contributors to this volume review Catesby's biography alongside the historical and scientific significance of… Read More
