1958. Nagayo Yoshirō 長與喜朗 (長与善郎), author and Onchi Kōshirō 恩地孝四郎, binding. Sono Yoru その夜 [That Night]. Tokyo: Asahi Shimbunsha 朝日新聞社. Shōwa 23 [1948]. 1st printing, 6 page foreword, 337+ pp of Japanese text. 8vo., Decorated wrappers, printed slipcase, some browning to slipcase and cover, else good condition overall. Included in the Onchi binding raisonné, Onchi Kōshirō Seihon no Gyō 恩地孝四郎装本の業 as #321, also color illustrated in Hon No Bijutsu 本の美術, though neither reference shows the slipcase. Nagayo Yoshirō 長與喜朗 (1888-1961) had been a member of the Shirakaba 白樺 (White Birch) group since 1911 and was known as a representative of its characteristic humanism as an author and playwright. One of Onchi's better late bindings.

Western bound in incised leatheroid over boards. 26.8 x 19.5 cm. 78 b+w images, mostly full page of "Decorative Cuts" drawing on the female form - flappers, vamps and decadent androgynous beauties in many roles, pirates, a cowgirl, a nun, etc., etc. Ero-guro meets Beardsley. Very good condition in the original publisher's slipcase. Very unusual, showing a different side of the decorative impulse in the Japanese 1930s.

Resembles the copy at Mitchell p. 237, save that it has a green title page on the front inner pastedown and an 11 page Hishiya Magobei advertisement for books, dated the first year of Bunsei [1818]. Good b+w and sumi-shaded bunjin style images by Chikutô [1776-1853]. Good condition in clasped chitsu case. By no means a common book.

Printed throughout in b+w woodcut on thin Chinese-style hard paper, (with many textual illustrations). A "secret guide" to the connoisseurship of artifacts - in this case bronze vessels, mirrors, wood-carvings, etc., etc. Interesting, informative and all in Japanese. Slightly browned throughout, complete as issued. 2 volumes.:.

One volume is dated Taisho 4 [1915] (Spring), one is 5 [1916] (Summer) and two (Fall and Winter) are 6 [1917]. Three of the volumes are in the original, decorated wrappers and one (Spring) is in plain wrappers. Compiled by Shimada Yukichi 島田勇吉 and published by Haigadō 俳画堂, Tokyo. Printed by Abe Nabegorō 阿部鍋五郎 (vol. 1), Matsui Naojirō 松井直次郎 (vols. 2-3) and Kishi Kageyoshi 岸景吉? (vol. 4). 4 volumes of original, color woodblock prints exploring the 4 seasons, some featuring poems within the woodcut.
