Leo Esaki shared the 1972 prize for his "discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in solids", which are among "the most direct consequences of the laws of modern physics". Born in Osaka and educated at Tokyo, Esaki worked initially for the Sony Corporation in Japan, where he made his seminal discovery in 1958.
