FIRST EDITION in original eight parts; pp.iv,430,127; a very good set in original printed wrappers; slightly soiled, the blank spines neatly renewed. Following a clumsy attack from Charles Kingsley, author of The Water-Babies, Newman wrote an apologia for his conversion to Catholicism, to convince the protestant public that he had not been an agent for popery in his Tractarian campaign, and his submission to Rome was entirely sincere. In the final part Newman mounted a general defence of Catholicism. The Apologia was a best-seller, making Newman financially secure for the first time since his conversion, and the reviews were almost universally favourable, especially the nonconformist ones. Relatively common in book form but scarce in the original parts. PMM????
