London: Grant Richards limited, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. C.W.R. Nevinson. This book is known for the beautiful color offset lithograph by Nevinson, signed in pencil. One of the great WWI images in striking color. Plate is near fine (just very minor far-edge wear at the text block contact), beautiful image. Quarter grey-green cloth with gray boards. Boards are worn and there is some paper chipping. Overall size 290 x 228mm (11 1/2 x 9 in). The binding is a very loose sewn binding, obviously intended for easy removal of the signed lithograph.

(8 x5æ"), full gray-brown levant morocco tooled in gilt on the covers and spines, raised bands, red levant morocco doublures tooled in gilt, moirÈ silk free endleaves on morocco hinges, top edges gilt -- an exceptionally well-bound set in beautiful condition (see photos). Period armorial bookplate of the original owner on the front flyleaves following the silk endleaves. No. 5 of 245 sets of the Argonaut Manuscript Edition. With original sheet of ink manuscript by Frank Norris from McTeague, inserted in front of Vol. I (The Octopus). It is a 16x10" sheet of paper which folds, and has the original ink smears and fingerprints of the author.

One of six copies with an exrta suite of the intaglio illustrations and an original copper intaglio plate in a folder. Loose in sheets as issued, the set in vellum backed folder in slipcase. Signed by the publisher and Marcel North, with an additional proof strike of one of the plates and an original full-page pen-and-ink illustration (a preliminary sketch) on what looks like japanese vellum paper. Lovely copy, minor wear to the slipcase and dab of what looks like binders glue on the spine.
