Full contemporary speckled brown calf, ruled in blind. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Edges speckled in red. Boards and spine a bit rubbed. A two inch split at the bottom outer hinge of the front board and a three-quarter inch split at the top outer hinge of the front board. A previous owner's book plate of front pastedown. A very good copy. "Cornelius Nepos, A Roman historian, a friend of Atticus and Catullus. His chief work was 'De Viris Illustribus', of which part survives." Each of the illustrations feature scenes of horses and carriages and their passengers on the road. Nos 1-4, 6 and 11 engraved by R.G. Reeve after Newhouse. Each image in vignette and marked in margin, C.B. Newhouse, del (those by Reeve so identified), and McLean's imprint and date.
