The First UK printing published by Andre Deutsch in 1971. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. A very light push to the upper spine. Just a hint of toning to the text block. Minimal offsetting to the pastedowns. One neat previous owner's name to the upper front end paper. Light creasing to the upper corner of the first 50 pages which appears to be a production issue. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Tiny rub to the lower spine tip and some light creasing at the upper spine end and upper edges. The rear panel and flaps are exceptionally clean. The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Signed (without dedication) to the title page by the author. This title won the 1971 Booker Prize and V.S. Naipaul went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001. The sole UK printing published by The Fleece Press in 1993. The BOOK is in Fine condition. Introduction by Allen Freer: 'John Nash the wood engraver' and 'Printer's Note and Aknowledgements' by Simon Lawrtence. One of only 12 special copies set in Monotype Caslon at the Whittington Press which were printed on Gampi Vellum and bound in full classic vellum by Smith Settle. There were also a standard hundred copies printed on Zerkall paper and bound in quarter vellum. The complete edition being 112 copies. Small folio. 12 X 8.75 ins. Gilt title on the spine. The 21 wood engravings printed from the wood include 7 of the artist's outstanding engravings from 'Poisonous Plants'. The engravings are markedly enhanced on having been printed on vellum. This volume was issued to mark the centenary of the birth of John Nash. A fine copy of this extremely scarce book in cream cloth covered drop-back-box lined with green paper by Smith Settle. This is number '300' of an edition of only 375 numbered copies. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original black cloth binding with bright gilt titles. Some slight rubbing at the spine tips with a little loss at the upper spine. Pages unopened to top edges in right angled or French fold format as published and all twelve B/W woodcuts by Paul Nash are present. A hint of toning to the text-block, otherwise internally very bright with a colour frontispiece and many sepia illustrations within the text and illustrated endpapers, all by Diana Stanley. Blue cloth boards with a brown vignette to the front cover and brown titles and illustration to the spine. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good- condition. Worn with losses to the spine ends and corners. A large diagonal closed tear across most of the rear panel with closed tears to the flap folds. Some edge-wear, creasing and age related markings but having said this the wrapper comes together well in the removable Brodart archival cover. Loosely laid in is a short H/W note from Mary Norton's grand-daughter Charlotte, which accompanied the book as a Christmas present.
