Description:
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1887. First edition (337 pp., index). Large 4to, half leather, five raised bands, gilt titles to spine, marbled edges and endpapers (chipped front edge); featuring 12 handsome full-page colour plates of native birds by Robert Ridgway and 9 full-page b&w engravings of fishes. This report, the third of five reports comprising the Arctic Series, is in four sections which, partly as a personal narrative and partly a scientific tract, describe the birds, mammals, fishes, and insects of Alaska. Nelson’s health, compromised by the rigours of the expedition into difficult country, prevented him from completing the report, and the responsibility of concluding the work passed to Henshaw. Found in a distraught state, the book has been expertly repaired and restored. An entirely presentable copy. Colour plates of birds

Description:
Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1823. Fourth edition, ‘much improved’ (vii, 367; index, adverts). Small octavo in new three-quarter purple cloth and fancy marbled paper, gilt titles to spine. As Nicols says, this handsome little book ‘is intended as an assistant to Gentlemen, whose business necessarily confines them to the Chamber and to the Counting-Room, who seek health and recreation at their Villas; and to the Ladies of their families who take upon themselves the management of their own Gardens and Parterres’. Nicols (sometimes spelt ‘Nichols’) is cited approvingly by M.E. Jackson in her Florist’s Manual (1816). A scarce home gardening book (mind you, quite a big home) in a smart new binding. The pages of this clean, bright copy remain unopened, and the Directory awaits its first reader (who should be equipped with a paper -knife).

London: Tho. Bennet, 1700. First edition (354, adverts). Octavo, in contemporary full leather, Cambridge style binding, gilt titles and decorations to the spine, five raised bands. Frontispiece an engraving of cultivated land (with an old, rather neat repair). Skillfully rebacked (probably in the 19th century) with ‘Faelix’ rather than ‘Foelix’ in gilt. Previous owners’ signatures/ names (William Gayer, who may not have cared greatly for correct spelling, on spine; John Keslake, who practiced his signature on the blank verso of the title page; and ‘NW’ whose initials are blind-stamped on front and rear panels). Timothy Nourse (c. 1639- 1699) ‘is particularly remembered for his posthumously published book., a volume on agricultural improvement, garden design, the abuses of servants, alehouses, the poor law.that drew directly from local and personal experience. [Campania Foelix] came to the attention of the later eighteenth-century writers on agricultural… Read more

Description:
Cambridge (Boston): Hilliard and Brown (Hilliard and Gray), 1832 (1834). First edition (vi, 675 pp., index; vii, 620 pp., index). Octavo (20 cm.), illustrations by Bowen and Hall. The two volumes complete with many engraved b&w illustrations. In original decorative blue-green cloth and paper labels, some pages unopened. In the Preface, Nuttall pays handsome tribute to his ‘eminent friend Mr. Audubon’ and regrets that ‘the whole manuscript had not been placed under his revision.’ Endpapers browned as usual, covers spotted and faded, worn. Text block is tight and clean throughout. (This seems the fate of the books’ original bindings, or at least those I have seen-- the paper-thin publisher’s cloth wears through, weakening the hinges, and the paper labels dry out and begin to flake.) A hard to find classic of American ornithology.
