Signed by Tadayuki Naito on the title page. Scarce in hardcover and even scarcer signed.

Hirosaki, Japan, 1941. Hardcover. Very good. One photograph album, measuring about 6.5" x 8" (17cm x 20cm), filled with portraits and some snapshots (46 in various sizes, mostly smaller than 3" x 3", a few larger), and also 45 small-format or regular size real photo postcards (the smaller ones measure about 3.75" x 2.5"). Album in very good condition with very mild edgewear, and the photographs, mostly laid-into mounts, are in excellent condition (some are glued to the album leaves). Each photograph has a detailed caption in Japanese, which we have had translated by a service (it's a literal translation - not edited for style). There are many portraits of soildiers, doctors, and some women who we presume, based on the era, are nurses. [Cleveland and elsewhere], 1939. String binding. Very good +. Oblong quarto. 163 photographs, nearly all measuring about 2.75" x 4.5", including white borders. Most photographs are laid in to corner mounts, some of which are missing. Most, though not all, of the photographs are captioned in white ink on the album leaves, and there are sometimes further details inked or typed on the verso of the prints. (Some of those lacking album captions have some identifying notations on the verso). Apart from occasional age-toning or a few mild stains, the photographs are in excellent condition; very good or better. Some minor mold/soiling to the album boards and extremities. A focused, detailed, and well-composed group of identified images which offer a close-up of working life on the Great Lakes on the eve of World War II. (London): Nonesuch Press, 1924. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto, unpaginated. A crisp, clean, very nice copy, about fine, lacking the dust jacket. This is number 19 of 375 limited copies. A stark and lovely woodcut-driven work, which, while not a "wordless novel," clearly anticipates the style of Lynd Ward and his contemporaries. Nash was a well-kown artist, whose unsettling, eerily whimsical landscapes of World War I helped usher modernist trends into British art. His woodcuts in this volume are no less impressive than his canvas work.

Marbled endpapers. Outer joints scuffed, and the front hinge a bit tender, but holding. Mild even rubbing to the boards. Stately armorial bookplate of Robert and Mary Amory on the front paste-down. Early owner's name on the title leaf, partly perished due to trimming by the binder. Contents clean and bright. Bound without half-title, if there was one. Scarce volume by this early French feminist writer, in a signed binding.

Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, 1808. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo, 168pp., with one foldout plate. Ex-library with some markings. Just a fair copy in contemporary brown calf. Rear board detached, but present. The spine had been rebacked in modern blue cloth, which someone at some point tried to remove, but gave up, leaving most of the backstrip. Internally rather clean, though the title page had been re-attached at the gutter with paper tape. Purely a reading copy, this scarce tome outlines the author's groundbreaking ideas on pedagogy, which he would later implement at the Owenite utopian community in New Harmony, Indiana. This example bears the ownership signature of Samuel Swett, an influential Bostonian who developed the merchant marine presence in that city. The 19th-century Newburyport Library bookplate bears his printed name, indicating that this volume indeed was a bequest of Swett's estate.

Rare pocket guide to golf authored exclusively by women, likely just pre-war, and certainly predating the LPGA, which was established in 1950. Contents include photographs and biographies of four women golfers (Hicks, Hall, Dettweiler, and Berg), concise information on etiquette, determination of handicaps, and some basic rules and best practices. On the recto of each spread is a color illustration with a golf tip and a brief verse. Most interesting is a four--page segment entitled "Suggestion for Women's Program," which gives a number of structural and procedural suggestions for women who wish to form a ladies' golf club. Neich archives in theory and practise the figurative paintings of more than eighty meeting houses across New Zealand (especially in the east of the North Island), many of which have now disappeared. Figurative paintings circa 1840s distinguished themselves from the Maori traditions restricted to body painting and coating of timber with red ochre and abstract scroll patterns, known as kowhaiwhai.

Scarce and highly detailed volume describing early Swedish settlement in the northern Mississippi River Basin, south of Minnesota.

Washington DC: James B. Steedman, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 254pp. A very good copy in full calf with black leather label. Thomas A. R. Nelson's own copy with his name embossed in gilt on the front panel. Nelson, a congressman from East Tennessee was a strong believer in the constitution and refused to enjoin the southern cause believing strongly in the Constitution and keeping Tennessee in the Union. He was elected to Congress as a Whig in 1859 and after winning re-election in 1861 he was arrested by the Confederates. He served on the defense team of Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial. Scarce in any condition, this copy is an extraordinary symbol for Constitutional history.  .
