In 1880, The Cape May & Sewell's Point Railroad Company was incorporated by real estate developer and railroad and steamship owner, Jonathan Cone. This original hand drawn and colored railroad map shows building lots and company developed property at Poverty Beach, north of Cape May, New Jersey. The railroad line shown here extended north from Cape May along Stockton Street and Poverty Beach to the Inlet House hotel and the yacht pier at Sewell's Point. Czech-language trade literature for "Norit" a proprietary activated carbon used in the sugar beet industry to whiten refined granulated sugar and remove contaminants. Half tone illustrations show factories and heavy machinery; diagrams explain various industrial processes such as filtering and drying. The Norit process used vegetable-based decolorizing carbon, replacing bone char in sugar refining.

Nine autograph letters signed to and from Nathaniel Goodwin of Hartford, Connecticut, all concerning genealogical matters especially of the Ely Family of Lyme. The group comprises five incoming letters to Goodwin and four outgoing-nine in all, six of which were written in 1844-1845 plus three from 1854. The letters penned by Goodwin himself are written individually to Hubbard Ely, Esq. and Amos H. Ely of Saybrook, Connecticut and James Ely of Boston, Massachusetts. Proceedings and anti-slavery resolutions adopted by the 1848 Ohio Free Territory Convention of the newly formed "Free Soil" Party. The party met in Columbus to encourage attendance at a national Free Soil convention in Buffalo and to demand "No more Slave States and No Slave Territory." (p6) The convention resolved to approve Congressman David Wilmot's "opposition to the demands of the Slave Power" (his "Wilmot Proviso") and commended opposition to the nomination of slaveholder Zachary Taylor as Democratic candidate for president. C.1890s Cattle and other livestock fence trade catalog issued by Neuhauser Bros., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania farm machinery and hardware merchants. The Neuhausers entered fence business in 1891, devoting themselves to marketing and selling the "Jones Locked Wire Fence" system with its "stock proof lock," manufactured by the Jones National Fence Company of Columbus Ohio. The catalogue references awards won by the Jones National Fence Company at the Detroit Exposition of 1892 and the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The catalogue, more of a marketing brochure, describes the various gauges of wire used to make the fences, the clamps and crimping tools used to assemble them, and instructions for building, plus a table on spacing and advice on tension bolts. Contemporary study of the initial efforts to integrate Black Americans into the United States' Armed Forces. After the Second World War, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 abolishing discrimination in the military on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin. Much of the enforcement of the new integration policies began under President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the early 1950s, at the time of the Korean War. Author and journalist Lee Nichols includes much historical background and includes a chapter on "The Woman Problem."

Charming commencement issue from this Atlanta, Georgia college, the oldest private historically Black liberal arts college for women. This issue of the The Campus Mirror-"The Students' Own Publication"-documents the Spelman Class of 1944. It shows their portraits and presents capsule summaries of their college careers. A few leading faculty members are highlighted as are the class superlatives (e.g. "Most Pleasant," "Best Singer," "Most Scientific," etc.), club and activity reports, Class Poem, The Ivy Oration, undergraduate class photos, etc.-many of the typical elements of a yearbook. Also includes editorials, ads, and some news of the nearby all-male Morehouse College with which Spelman was affiliated as part of the Atlanta University Center.

Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary was an outgrowth of Gouverneur High School incorporated in 1828 in St. Lawrence County, New York. The seminary was conducted by the Black River Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The theme of the Oration was the cultivation of the skill of oratory. It was delivered by Rev. William Ward Ninde, a prominent Methodist preacher in New York State and the father of Bishop William X. Ninde (1832-1901). Rare, OCLC recording one copy (U. Rochester).

The image is based on the medallion by Jean Bapitste Nini (1717-1786), a commission he received from Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont (1726-1803) in whose house at Passy Franklin lived. In addition to a "Rhode Island Clam Bake" (the complete menu is printed here-from "Clams! Clams! Clams!" to "Smoke"), the day's activities included various aquatic races and an assortment of traditional field events or picnic games-a parody of military and cavalry exercises.
