Description:
Dhaka: Ananya, 1997. First printing. 96 pp., 8vo. Sewn signatures in illustrated wrappers. Translated from the Bengali by Kabir Chowdhury. Light marking to covers, and mild corner bump, otherwise very good. Inscribed to Steve Lacy and Irene Aebi. Taslima Nasreen, born in Bengladesh in 1962, is a feminist and humanist writer, physician, and activist who has been the object of violent campaigns of intolerance from fundamentalists and extremists in her own country and elsewhere. Exiled in 1994, physically attacked, her books banned and burned, and the subject of fatwas and death threats, she has continued to write and speak out. She has written forty books in Bengali, including novels, essays, and seven volumes of autobiography (so far), but she began as a poet, and has published thirteen books of poems. Composer and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy wrote settings for English translations of NasreenÂ’s poems in his “jam opera” The Cry, recorded and released in 1999 — the same year in which Nasreen… Read more

Description:
New York: Summit Books, 1987. First printing. 236 pp., 5.75 x 8.75 inches. Quarter-cloth and paper over boards, in printed dust-jacket. Light edgewear and bumps to corners, otherwise very good in a very good dust-jacket (for peculiarities of this copy, see rest of description). Howard NormanÂ’s first publications were celebrated translations from traditional narrative poems of the Swampy Cree and other indigenous peoples (The Wishing Bone Cycle and Where the Chill Comes From, for example); he has also translated a volume of Haitian folktales by Paule Barton (The Woe Shirt). Alongside these renderings he has published more than a dozen novels and books of stories, most of which are set in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The Northern Lights was his first novel, and first nontranslated book for adults. This is a copy with a mysterious provenance, seemingly used for an unidentified recording. A label in masking tape on the front of the jacket, only part of which remains, once read “NARRATOR,” and… Read more

Description:
Austin, TX: University of Texas Press, 1999. First printing. 113 pp., small 4to. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. Photos by Alice Snearly and Lon Kelley; text by Noyes with the assistance of Daniel J. Gelo; foreword by Larry McMurtry. Descriptions of thirty-one photographs, with a historical introduction and a note on the images. Faint toning to page edges, otherwise essentially as new in a fine jacket with very light soiling. Warmly inscribed by the author to an old friend at the time of publication. An investigation of a collection of anonymous glass-plate negatives purchased by McMurtry and loaned to the University of Texas; Noyes, with the help of Comanche scholar Gelo, were able to identify the photographers, subjects, and settings. The images "preserve the 'interim' generation of Comanches, including Quanah Parker and two of his wives, whose fathers were the last to hunt buffalo on the Great Plains and who themselves endured reservation life and force moves." Uncommon signed.
