Description:
151 folding leaves. Three parts in one vol. Thickish 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers (upper wrapper a little worn), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover (label somewhat defective), new stitching. From the colophon: Kyoto: Nakamura Magobei, 1710. First edition of this important and useful bibliography. In 1710 "the Kyoto publisher Nakamura Magobei compiled a catalogue known as Bengi shomokuroku. The aim of this catalogue was to help the reader disentangle book titles which could be easily confused because they were read in the same way, because they used the same characters but different readings, or because they were known by several titles...Nakamura Magobei included manuscripts (kakihon) and explained that he had 'given the majority of the many titles of manuscripts that have been circulating since past times'."-Laura Moretti, "The Japanese Early-Modern Publishing Market Unveiled: A Survey of Edo-Period Booksellers' Catalogues," in East Asian Publishing and Society, Vol. 2 (2012), pp. 206n…

Description:
12 full-page hand-colored woodcut illus. (each with several figures, some with text) & one black & white full-page illus. 61 folding leaves. Four parts in one vol. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan, probably Kyoto]: Preface dated 1690. First edition, and very rare, of this work on funerary rites by Nakamura (1629-1702/03), written in classical Chinese with Japanese kunten reading marks. The 12 woodcut illustrations have been beautifully colored by hand at an early date. Nakamura, who probably had a merchant background, was a Neo-Confucian scholar in the early Tokugawa period and he and Ito Jinsai (1627-1705) were considered the preeminent scholars of their generation. Nakamura wrote the first illustrated encyclopedia to be published in Japan. His Neo-Confucian learning, influenced by Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and largely focused on ritual, is seen in this work on funerary rites. When it comes to sons' and daughters' respectful acts towards their…

Two double-page & three full-page woodcuts. 14.5 folding leaves (pagination irregular but complete). 8vo, orig. patterned orange wrappers (a little soiled & rubbed), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Ushu [in today's Yamagata Prefecture], Naraya Ichibei, 1691. First edition of this very rare work on practical business mathematics and the use of the abacus by the wasan scholar, Nakamura Seiei (d. 1734). There is no copy of the first edition in WorldCat, which lists only the reprints of 1926 and 1935. The Mujin (or tanomoshi), a sort of rotating savings and credit cooperative association, has existed in Japan since the middle Kamakura period (1185-1333) and was only superseded by commercial banks in the Meiji period. Mujin ko "allowed individuals to predict with a degree of certitude what return to expect from deposits made to the cooperative fund...the structure allowed it to be used as an instrument for investment. The precision with which this rotation of funds was…

Many woodcut illustrations, including five double-page woodcuts. 30; 29; 29 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto: Ten'nojiya Ichirobei, 1743. First edition. "The author Nakane Genjun (1701-1761) was a Wasan and calendar scholar. He was the son of Nakane Genkei (1662-1733). This book is not a systematized Wasan book but one that is mainly compiled from mathematical recreations, featuring inserted illustrations throughout. It freely covers an assortment of both hard (academic) and soft (recreational) materials... "At the end, it introduces the results of the fields into which most research efforts were poured in those days, such as Kohaijutsu. It was Kasai who wrote the afterword to the book; he was a disciple of Nakane, and his principal occupation was the operator of a bookstore called Ten'nojiya. After this, Ten'nojiya would become the sole bookstore that undertook the publication of major…

Edited by Yusuishi Tanaka. Woodcut frontis. & eight fine double-page woodcut illus. 21; 18 folding leaves. Two vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (wrappers rather worn & rubbed), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (rubbed), new stitching. Osaka, Edo, & Kyoto: 1749. First edition of this beautifully illustrated book; the fine woodcuts are by Sukenobu Nishikawa (1671-1750 or -51 or -54), who "counts among the foremost masters of so-called ukiyo-e (primitive) prints. His subject matter, like that of his contemporaries, revolved around images of women walking. These images are stylised, lending the rhythmic movement of the sumptuous robes an almost sculptural effect. Nishikawa also did many book illustrations...Nishikawa founded a whole school, and according to his family archives Harunobu (1725-1770) was a follower of his."-Oxford Art Online. This work is concerned with the education of women in its widest sense, combining knowledge with taste. Four types of girls' "play" are described…

Six vols. 8vo, orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (label on Vol. I somewhat defective), new stitching. [Kyoto]: Yao Kanbē 八尾勘兵衛, Preface by Nanshi Wenxiu dated 1417, but late 17th or 18th century. First edition to be printed in Japan of this collection of the words and deeds of famous Chinese monks of the Chan (J.: Zen) 禪 lineages. The Expanded Supplement was edited by Nanshi Wenxiu 南石文琇 (1345-1418) over a period of 30 years. It was first published in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, in 1671, a considerable time after Nanshi's death. We assume that the Japanese edition to which our copy belongs postdates this Chinese edition. The entry for our edition in WorldCat (40222684) estimates that it is from the 17th century. The genre of records of the "transmission of the lamp" - a metaphor for the Buddhist teachings - fits somewhere between a biography and a collection of recorded sayings. It focuses more on the teachings of the monks featured than…

Woodcut device on title. 166, [1] pp. Small 8vo, cont. vellum over limp boards (lower cover a little defective, minor worming in lower margin but touching one letter of imprint). Paris: F. Targa, 1627.

First edition of a work of the greatest importance in the history of book collecting and libraries; Naudé's bibliographic canon still influences us today. The first edition is a very rare book; its continuing importance is attested to by the many reprints in French and translations into other languages well into the 20th century.

In this first comprehensive guide devoted to how to form a library, Naudé (1600-53), Cardinal Mazarin's librarian, also stresses the importance of making the library available to the public. Naudé wrote that it was necessary to gather all types of books, regardless of the author's religion or political beliefs. He "advised collectors to buy books on all subjects, taking pains to…

Eight folding engraved plates. xviii, 524, [4], 29 pp. Small 8vo, cont. polished calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: L.E. Ganeau, 1750. First edition, a translation by Louis Anne Lavirotte, of Needham's Account of some New Microscopical Discoveries (1745) and his Observations upon the General Composition and Decomposition of Animal and Vegetable Substances (1749). This edition contains substantial additions by Needham which appear here for the first time, including his "forward-looking theory of reproduction"-D.S.B., X, p. 9. The first English Catholic priest to be elected to the Royal Society of London, Needham (1713-81), developed a theory of generation in this work which placed him in the vitalist camp through its reliance on principles peculiar to living things and its assignment of self-patterning powers to matter. It differed from Buffon's in its denial of chance combinations of mathematically countable genetic traits. The final 29 pages -…

First edition in English, with considerable additions based on his own experiments by the translator William Lewis, author of the Commercium Philosophico-Technicum (London: 1763-65). Neumann (1683-1737), contributed significantly to the establishment of Stahlian chemistry in Germany and its dissemination throughout Europe. "He distinguished clearly between pure and applied chemistry and insisted that the chemical approach to nature was vastly superior to the mechanical philosophy."-D.S.B., X, p. 26. "The text is divided into three approximately equal parts covering the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms. One of the best textbooks of the period, it contains (according to Cole) 'the first exposition of Stahl's phlogiston theory in English.' A bibliography of Neumann's…
